So much of this season has been Steven’s powers going out of control at just the right time so as to keep him from hiding the emotional stress he’s under. His powers are governed by his emotions, sure, but it’s not a coincidence--it’s his subconscious lashing out, trying to get him to be heard instead of bottling things up over and over. Now it’s forcing him to show Connie that things are going wrong, and he’s not going to be able to hide it from her.
