OH, itâs that Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon character! Previously just a mad scientist who helps Sonic and co, in the Archie Comics continuity he is a silly scientist of the Onyx City Council with a snazzy uniform and one hell of a glow up. Heâs much more handsome here than in the source material. xD
Heâs a bit too much of a doofy, funny German accent archetype, but he makes for a good supporting character, and heâs always there to whisk Silver in the direction of the plot! Plus, his friendly and positive demeanour quickly grew on me. xD Doesnât anybody else think of his voice as the Medicâs from Team Fortress 2?
The Onyx City Council is a cool, if sadly underutilized bunch. As the main villains and instigators of the plot, they are steadily built up and appear very creepy and off-putting. Their habit of uttering âYes.â to everything and how they almost always slink together as a unit also puts them in the Creepy Cool category, though Iâd be lying if I said they werenât underdeveloped throughout this arc, the only one which they appear in.
Though appropriately a shadowy organization, we sadly never learn of their motives and why they wish to experiment with Genesis Portals, nor anything about their individual personalities or what they look like (though judging how most of them are taller than Gold, a Mobian, Iâm guessing they might be humans under there). Theyâre very aesthetically interesting and I love their design and dotted masks, especially when put in Yardleyâs signature silhouette, but their personalities and motivations stay static from here to #82.
Pffft, nice Decap Attack reference đđ
You know, barring the post-apocalyptic hell world in Sonic 06, I donât think we ever got to see so clearly into Silverâs future. Visually, I think its rather impressive! We got Mobians and humans living alongside each other like in the present in Archie Sonic, the cities are all high-tech-looking and got glowing lines etched on them (the same with some costume design if you look closely) and the settlement is called âOnyx Cityâ, which would imply it takes place on Onyx Island, that future version of Angel Island in Sonic Rivals.
I appreciate all the neat design choices and callbacks, though Iâm certain this praise isnât universal. Iâm sure a lot of fans felt the mystery in Silverâs timeline is entirely the point and that this ruins the ambiguity of it, and it couldnât be set in stone âcause the pre-reboot established that every time Silver goes to the present-day it changes the future just a little every time. However, I feel the artistic vision of this future timeline still holds up! They even establish that those bearing Silverâs gloves and boots are âteal-class workersâ, which would explain why our future boi finds himself on the run quite a lot even in his hometown.
This wouldnât be a Silver future timeline without a Sonic 06 reference though. The âCivil Protection Robotsâ are almost a dead ringer for the sleek Egg Gunners, though at least theyâre more dangerous than the typical SWATbot.
Looks like weâre getting into Evan Stanleyâs first forray into writing Silver the Hedgehog in Archie Sonic! For those who didnât know, sheâs well known for writing for the character in her fan comic Ghosts of the Future, and her providing an awesome as heck cover of future boy showcasing his powers must have been the most exciting thing for a 2010s Sonic comic fan to see!
But is âThe Silver Ageâ arc still good? Well, the story might not be the best but Iâll be sure to give an in depth look at each of these Silverâs future-centric stories hold up!
Now THIS! This raised a lot of inspiring theories back in the day. It's the level select gates from Sonic Generations, released not too long before this issue came out! It cleverly hints towards future threats that Silver and co. will face, but looking back, they donât hit quite the same impressive beats as this cliffhanger would imply.
Itâs more of a prop than a plot point.
This issue feels very much like an introduction story in every sense of the word, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I think Iâm just so used to the brilliant pacing of Ian Flynnâs stories at this point. xD
The main conflict of the entire issue revolves around a Genesis Portal opening up and Silver getting himself and the Professor out of danger, closing it with his telekinesis powers. It's basically a precursor to his job of closing Genesis portals in issue #75.
