Goth sub-types are a joke!
Goth sub-types... it seems a new one is created on a weekly basis. Why?!?
A lot of people nowadays don't get how sub-types of goth were originally made as a joke and were treated as in-jokes. I originally found them on goth websites in the mid 90s. They possibly originated online from alt.gothic newsgroups but they are probably even older than that.
People did not aspire to be mopeygoth, romantigoth or even perkigoff - they just were themselves. If they saw an aspect of one or two of these sub-types in themselves they'd have a giggle and carry on. They may use them in conversation with others too. It wasn't something to be taken seriously.
Its hard to say when people started taking them seriously but somewhere along the line someone saw the list of goth sub-types and decided 'Hmmm I like that one so I'll be that one!' at some point. Truth be told most goths can see aspects of multiple goth sub-types in themselves because one is never big enough to cover a person. People are complicated and multi-faceted.
The fact people take goth sub-types seriously and have even expanded them to include new types is laughable. I think a lot of it extends from the 'everything is goth' mentality. If anything can be goth then a sub-type can be made for it and everyone must accept it because of the other mentality that 'goths are open minded and accepting of everyone'.
Sure, goths are generally open-minded (or at least tolerant of the weird and unusual) but that does not mean that they must accept everyone who says they are goth are goth. They also do not have to accept that everything proclaimed to be goth is now goth too. Especially when people doing this stuff have no clue about goth to begin with.
What ever happened to simply being goth or not goth? How hard is it to simply be or not be without over complicating everything?
You don't have to be exactly the same cliche all the time nor follow a single style. Hell you don't even have to be goth!
