Buick Encore gets a makeover and scores well
Text and photos by Michael Hozjan
How ironic that the company known for big luxury cars is building its success on a small, subcompact SUV. If you have any doubt about Buick’s success with the Encore, you just need to count how many you see on the road on any given day. Today alone I came across a half dozen and that was without looking for them. Buick’s smallest vehicle has over the past four years slowly chipped away at the market to become Buick’s biggest seller.
Redesigned in 2017 with a tastefully modern looking front-end treatment (the gaudy waterfall grille and bulging headlights are gone) and an updated cabin, the Buick clearly has its sights sets on the competition. And that competition is as varied as the people who buy them. The subcompact crossover market includes everything from the affordable Chevrolet Trax and Honda HR-V to upscale models like the Audi Q3 and Land Rover Evoque.
Depending on your needs, desires and taste, the Encore fits somewhere in between with nothing to be apologetic about. And until Cadillac comes out with a subcompact crossover the Buick is GM’s sole contender in an upscale segment of a growing niche market. I’ve often asked what warrants the luxury moniker these days, so I’ll leave it up to you if you want to tag that label on the Buick.
Sharing the same platform as the Chevrolet Trax, the Korean built Buick gets a slight bump in horsepower for 2017 thanks to a slight increase in displacement and direct fuel injection from the turbocharged 1.4L inline four, now at 153 ponies with a respectable 177 ft.lbs. of torque. Incidentally last year’s model had 138 horses with 148 ft.lbs. by comparison. That increase won’t have you burning up any rubber, both the Kia Soul Turbo (see below) and Nissan’s Juke feature greater numbers, but the Encore does a good job of passing semis on the highway and getting up to speed on highway on ramps. A smooth six-speed automatic transmission is the only tranny available across the model line.
Available in both front and all-wheel-drive versions with prices starting at $25,445 for the base front drive model and climb to $36,445 for the AWD Premium trim model.
Despite its small exterior, there’s a surprisingly ample head and legroom room for four six footers and unlike some of the Encore’s competitors, the back seat flips forward and folds down to give a flat cargo area. While you won’t have enough room to carry gear to cross the Sahara, the cargo bay does give enough floor space for groceries and some supplies from the garden center, which I suspect is more what Encore owners will use it for. A footnote here, I wasn’t crazy about the Encore’s insanely cantilevered forward headrests – what were they thinking, and the door panel cubby holes make no sense.
A larger infotainment screen is the centerpiece of a redesigned dash. By keeping the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) mantra, (thankfully there’s a lack of over-indulgence in techno wizardry) controls are well placed and easily read and manipulated. Our Premium model featured a 7-speaker Bose sound system to make travel that much sweeter.
The cabin is surprisingly quiet for a vehicle in this category, an attestation to Buick’s commitment of providing quality even in their entry-level vehicles and one can see why it’s compared to the upper crust Euro elitists like the Audi and Mercedes’ GLA. The fact that it rained almost the entire week of my drive, a situation which only amplifies road noise, only solidified the Encore’s quietness.
From a safety aspect, while there’s no adaptive cruise control, but the Premium model I drove did have forward collision alert and lane departure warning. The Encore earned a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Door panels make no sense. you can’t stick anything in the compartmentunder the armrest -well maybe American cigarettes, and you’ll spill your drink trying to get it into the bottom tray.
Not a bad overall deal in a diminutive size. It may not be for everybody, but the Buick proved time and time again to have a lot going for it and certainly had a lot less pitfalls than many of its competitors.
Price as tested: $36,445
This is the new 2017 Toyota C-HR. It might look like a tough little SUV, but it’s actually a small, car-based hybrid. Basically, it’s your woke boyfriend.
Hilarious write-up on the Pictures of the C-HR I linked earlier.
C-HR, Toyota’s Subcompact Crossover, I can’t wait for these to arrive here.
