I actually really liked Subliminal.

Like, the mechanics aren’t explained too well, the whole “psychological horror where you play as Man feeling bad about what he did to Insert-Female-Character-Here” is overdone to death in these games.

But GOD, this game is pretty incredible. It’s funny, the environments are really well-crafted, multiple God Damn Endings and actual replay value, the SOUND DESIGN. It was pretty fun figuring out puzzles with a friend of mine.

seems bizarre to me that so many people are readily writing subliminal off as “slop”, given that it clearly was a labour of love despite the many issues with it 😭 i feel like that’s so harsh

subliminal game spoilers

so what ive gathered i think:

caleb is lily's older brother, caleb was born in 2005 whereas lily was born in 2011. the erase ending memory doors lead up to 2024/2025 meaning that caleb is around 20 years old. the door to 2016 is missing its sign, so i assume that means The Accident tm happened in 2016, when lily was 5 and caleb was 11.

theres a mention on one of the waterpark signs that children under 14 need a like guide or caretaker present, and i originally thought caleb was old enough to fill that role for lily, but now im not too sure. though there does also appear to be some signs of parental neglect/abuse as well - most strongly evidenced by that one door with the angry yelling and banging and stuff down the 1-10 hallway with smile digging through the trash

theres also all the stuff hidden around or on objects - the "your fault" the "do something caleb, she's dying" on the fire extinguisher, etc. i still cant quite figure out what the last word on the whiteboard during the first puzzle says, but it looks like "what did you ___?"

smile is obviously the mascot for the playplace, the area that probably encompasses the waterworks and the playplace and the arcade and all of that.

its hard to say where/how the accident happened, since both the waterworks slides breaking and specifically the red slide always being out of access and the presence of the "waterlogged" video games - versus the playplace falling apart and smiles more prominent presence, im not sure if i know enough to personally pinpoint with evidence what happened. but my gut says its more to do with the waterworks area. could be wrong

but its safe to say that the accident happened at this place, which distorted calebs view of smile - the mascot and thus representation of the area. it probably happened during a birthday celebration, whether caleb or lilys or some friend of theirs. its something that caleb feels personally responsible for given the constant "your fault"s, "do something"s, "do something caleb she's dying"s, the shouting behind the door, and the way the narrator/caleb's conscious gets angry and blames him on the canon route.
