Evaluation-
Research-
During this project I started off by researching different ways I could approach my choice of words. I actually started by looking at different layouts, from many different books in the library I documented ways I could use the story I wanted too rom in a book. I thought as Princess Diana is royal and respectable lady I thought by having the book on a modern outtake on the book. I wanted it to look clean and crisp and not loads of layouts all over the place. When looking at the typography books and different layouts it gave me the information to keep the book simple and with a wide space to work with.
I also looked into Pinterest which was a massive help as there are many possibilities to what I could do for my design. Keeping it simple was the best option as it could have more ideas for the layout and some involved photography which led me to the idea of using photography as my main artistic path in the piece. The idea was to make the photos elegant and relating as much as I can to Diana. Using the white space and one colour was the right approach was the right approach towards the book.
Even at the very start when I got the idea to create the book about conspiracy theories of Princess Diana I knew the book couldn't have crazy drawings or illustrations because that wouldn’t relate to her as a person or what she is known as to the public.
Most of my research was based through different books, websites and my place of words. The research is based throughout my project as I am always thinking of ideas and what I could next do to my book.
Development-
When in the making of my book I have discovered various developments from my mock piece to my final piece.
In my first mock I used various colours and shapes in my book, I didn't keep it simple. I wanted to show the colourful personality that Diana has but actually just by sticking with one colour was enough. Most of the shapes we cluttering and in the way of the text. The text wasn't visible and easy to read, the whole point is to see the text flow and make sense, with so many colours and shapes it was too confusing. There was no problem with the imagery which was what I was most pleased about because as a whole the the book is based on the imagery as of how powerful the photos are. From the front cover to the back.
In the second mock I adjusted the size and changed the colour to one, pink. The pink was the best option because it was subtle but elegant to her as a subject. I also looked into more experimentation on my second mock because I felt like I should of taken the step further in my piece, I didn’t want it to just be a plain book. I looked into printing on tracing paper and cutting out words. As my piece is based on conspiracy theories I wanted to show hidden truths or revealing the truth in various forms. Out of the two I realised the tracing paper was the most professional approach. Instead of putting it in the book, which was hard to attach I thought about using it for my front cover without it being so apart of the book but you could still take it away form the book. Another issue was that inside columns, they were way too small, which is why I found it so hard to put my text in. The book needed to be bigger.
As I came to the final I made the few adjustments form my previous tutorials, making the book bigger with the columns, subtitles needed to have the size gap inside the box and the ones without the box the same gap between the main text. When I made these changes I was most proud of my imagery because having full bleed on my front and back cover was bold and stood out. It intrigues the audience. After the experimentation of the tracing paper I decided to make a title band around the book that I can take on and off the book, it was a clever idea because it still hides her face in a faint, mysterious form. We want to see what the book is about when you see ‘Truth or Lies’ and a full bleed of her face.
Time-
I believe I have managed my time well because I wanted to get the most research that I can, it is the most important to me because it keeps my ideas flowing and if I am ever struggling I could always refer back to it. Also I think that I managed my time well with printing my book as there were a few issues with printing. As my book was 210 x 210 it had to be printed on SRA3 paper which wasn't great as the alignment was hard to fit together both sides. But because I gave myself time to print it, it didn't become an issue to be so worried about, yes it was stressful but I had plenty of time to sort the problem.
However one thing I would say I didn't manage well was my blog because I think I was so worried about the sketchbook and the book more. In addittion the better way was to complete each blog on the day off doing the workshop or induction, it would of been easier to of completed my work quicker
Feedback-
When I was getting feedback I think I listened and responded very well because I took ever piece of advice and applied it to all of my work. One tutorial they asked me to change the size of the book so you can adjust the columns to make them fit better in the book. For it to flow as well. I could of not listened as I was pleased with my book but the tutor was completely right after I changed the size I was happier with my work as the paragraphs fitted so much better and even with the imagery more.
Practice-
If I could go back again then I would change a couple of things to make sure I did more.
In my sketchbook I would of put more recordings from using indesign to show my process in more detail, as of screenshots because it would make more sense to show how I got to one to another. I wish I also tried out illustration and maybe added drawings in because it would of looked more creative and showed my skills to another level as I have never used it before.
One another thing I could of practised on was adding more posts to my blog that was related to my blog because it shows my recordings in a different way. I could of shown my inspirational ideas, processes and also what artist’s gave me ideas for my imagery and book layouts
Learnt-
Throughout this project I have learnt from various workshops, software and my subject of matter. In my workshops I have learnt how to be more free with typography but always the main tips to having the perfect typography. What widows and orphans are, how to read columns the right way and how they should be presented. Furthermore, I have learnt how to use multiple workshops but also how to print a book. The process was hard to get around but when you have to make many attempts to print and make multiple mock ups then it starts to click. Also with the use of indesign, probably the most hardest software to understand but with using it so much you get used to the process of creating a book, printing a book through acrobat and packaging a document so all your imagery and font are linked together.
Finally I think I have learnt the most through my subject of matter. As to looking through so many conspiracy theories about Princess Diana I have realised so much about her as a person, human being and how many people judge her way too quickly. After her divorce she went through so much in media and so many stories were made up of her and it wasn't fair how she was treated. She knew she would never be a royal but she knew that the people had her heart, the peoples hearts. She was like everyone else but as a royal she couldn't be who she was supposed to be truly.
Reflection-
Overall my book I am very pleased with my book as of how the layout has flowed through so well, with the colour, layout and size of the book. I am glad I changed the size and made sure the bleed is full on the front and back cover. The imagery works as a whole, it relates to Princess Diana, as she is a person who hides herself from the world but not anymore, she should be known as a confident human being, how her strong independence as a woman is still powerful to this day. That’s what I wanted to show in my imagery.
However I think if I could do it all over again I would try to put the tracing paper in the book over the imagery to present the truth underneath which is hiding under the tracing paper. Apart from that I wouldn't change anything. I think the imagery works with the story, the words and text make it look like a newspaper form and how the text flows through he book layout. The pink works with her as a subject, elegant and graceful.
