Chapter One: Substance Abuse
Throughout the movie, one of the biggest (perhaps subtle) common denominators of majority of the scenes in the film is the excessive use of substances, specifically tobacco, alcohol and cannabis. With the exception of inhibitor pills/antidepressants (such as bicuculline, securinine and metrazol, and the benzodiazepine), and other types of hard drugs (such as cocaine, heroine, you get what I mean…), chronic tobacco use and the mixing of alcohol and cannabis is a common method of numbing the nervous system in order to suppress one’s emotional awareness in order to “enjoy the high”.
