I saw Fantastic Four: First Steps last night and... it was good, better than I feared it was going to be. Let's get the problems out of the way first
• Julia Garner should have been Nova (Frankie Rae), just given Silver Surfers Origin.
• Vanessa Kirby's American accent was so forced in scenes that I kinda wish the movie just say that the Storm family was British and allow her and Joseph Quinn to use their real accents
• speaking of Sue Richards, I would not be surprised if Namor was in the original script, but the Director was told he had to use the stupid Aztec Namor from Black Panther 2, and he was like Fuck That and replaced him with Moleman. It's not really a problem, but I kept thinking, Why was Sue negotiating with Moleman? Thing was the member Moleman respected, then I thought about it...
• Finally, I was disappointed in Ebon Moss Bachrach depiction of Ben Grimm. He had none of of The Things bipolar anxiety, and why was Alicia Masters replaced by some random school teacher?
What I liked
the visuals, Galacticuss ship clashed with the FFs retro futuristic technology.
Human Torch is the best character in the film
Glactus was terrifying, Jack Kirby would be proud
For what he had to work with, Pedro Pascal was a good Reed. (The guy from 2005 film was better, strechy effects too) but this Reed and Sue had better chemistry.
We finally get Franklin Richards in the movies and he was adorable.
I give it ☆☆1/2 out of 5
