Do While @ Subterranean A.
Washington, DC.
May 2013.
Washington City Paper's Ally Schweitzer wrote a fantastic piece about D.C. D.I.Y. venue Subterranean A and what it meant to people as it closed its doors on Saturday night. I'm super bummed I couldn't be there since I had some great times there and am indebted to the people that showed me it. My biggest regret is missing Alex Bleeker playing there two summers in a row.
Also, I took quite a few videos at Subterranean A to 'document' some cool bands I saw there.
Lower Dens - "Batman" Weekends - "Psychedelic Mice" Julian Lynch - "Travelers" (Part 1) Julian Lynch - "Travelers" (Part 2) Julian Lynch - "Nen Vole" Big Troubles - Untitled ("Misery") Big Troubles - "Drastic and Difficult"
All in all, Subterranean A was a cool piece of D.C. D.I.Y. culture from an era I might have missed. You can only go to 9:30 Club so many times before you get tired of it. Then the same thing happens with Black Cat. When that was all over, Subterranean A remained.
Within a year and a half, the moldy, cacophonous basement had begun to fill a niche that no traditional venue in D.C. could. Beholden to no one, and with no interest in profit, the kids at Sub A could book whatever they wanted, handing 100 percent of the proceeds to the artists. For a year or two—a lifetime for a punk house—Subterranean A was D.C.’s best-curated independent venue.
Subterranean A, D.C.'s Most Unusual DIY Venue, Comes to an End - Arts Desk
I saw a lot of amazing shows at Sub-A over the years: Dustin Wong, Lower Dens, Deleted Scenes. More than even the music, though, it was the sense of community that kept me coming back. This was the kind of place where a random kid would offer you a slice of home-baked pie, where neighborhood children would show up to dance to the music, where you knew all your friends would be on a Thursday night. Subterranean-A was one of my favorite things about my old neighborhood--Logan Circle won't be the same without it.

RECRUDESCE - Head Underwater Mixtape
/re·cru·desce/ - To break out anew or come into renewed activity, as after a period of a state of quiet (but possibly temporary) inaction.
The homie Jimmy of Head Underwater is back from blog retirement, and to celebrate he dropped a splendid mix of some of his recent faves. Jimmy is great at finding and exposing those incredibly talented folks you might have missed on first listen, so I was pumped to hear what he had been digging. I've got the third installment of "Get To Know Your Neighbor" coming out this Friday and I wonder who it will be...

Sacred Animals x 40 Ounce Clothing MIx
My darling buddy Darragh of Sacred Animals had the pleasure of creating the latest mix for my eternal crushes out of London, the Forty Ounce Clothing boys. Since meeting Darragh, we have exchanged our fair share of tunes, and I've got to give credit to this guy for always having spot on taste. This mix is no exception.

Reptar at the Gibson Showroom in DC- :(
Right now, I am sitting on my futon bed, embittered. I've spent the morning masochistically reading the superawesomefunjoytime that was the Reptar show at the Gibson Showroom last night. Here is why I am so angry:
It was impossible to get tickets: the ticket link on Reptar's site never worked; the Gibson Showroom doesn't actually have an official website; also, I am fairly certain tickets to this show never went on sale to the public; finally, my friend and I tried to win tickets by slutting ourselves out on twitter in a retweet battle royale (this did not work).
Context to my anger over a seemingly innocuous missed opportunity:
I spent a week at Sundance being told I wasn't allowed into certain places because I either wasn't wealthy enough to pay or wasn't cool enough to be on the list. The only time this bothered me (because I am aware of the fact that I was lucky to go to Sundance in any capacity) was being repeatedly turned away from the Bing Bar. The ridiculously suited up bouncers informed me that the shows were private events and that there was no possibility that I could get in. I was turned away from the elusive Gary Clark, Jr. (because it would make me uncomfortable to call him my Moby Dick), Fitz and the Tantrums, and Grouplove. Missing these shows was emotionally devastating upsetting because they would have been incredibly special experiences for me.
I spent a lot of time ruminating about how shitty it felt to not even have the opportunity to get into an event that would be undoubtedly rad. I decided to rationalize away the ire I felt towards everyone around me the Bing Bar by chalking it up to Sundance being Sundancey. Sundance is simply an extenuating circumstance, a place where people try to make the exclusivity of the events they attend more salient than the memories that come from them. This being said, I eked my way into Shut Up and Play the Hits, barked something at James Murphy, met some cool people, and genuinely enjoyed every moment of Park City.
Then I came home to DC and the veneer of my rationalizations cracked. It wasn't Sundance being Sundancey. Everyone wants to be somewhere that other people can't get into, particularly in the music scene.
The refreshing exception: Subterranean-A. They make it moderately difficult to figure out what they are, where they are, and when the shows are, but once you figure that stuff out you're more than welcomed in. Along with that, you're surrounded by similarly enthusiastic audiophiles who just want to hear some good fucking music.
RANT OVER.
