Hello everyone (or anyone still here). Has it really been almost 2 years? Yikes.

Sorry for the very unceremonious silence since the last post. The time has been filled with welcoming a new human to the world alongside starting a new architectural design practice.

I have been thinking about this website a bit more in recent times. Architectural media has changed dramatically in the past 16 years since I started this blog (in a time before instagram and pinterest). There is now an overwhelming amount of amazing accounts across all platforms to discover amazing architecture. Part of this time-off was admittedly because Subtilitas started to feel a bit redundant and dated to me with these endless resources sharing the same/similar work as me. There was a non-existent competitive element to it that began to make it less enjoyable for a moment, and certainly contributed to my lack of effort here.

But more recently, I've come to realize that what I miss most about posting here was the personal exploration of architectural work both new and old. It is inspiriting to discover new practices, professionally motivating to come across projects that leave an impression, and immensely gratifying to meet a community around similar interests. So while I might be a little rusty, and will undoubtedly always be sharing work that can be found in a number of other places, I'm eager to pick back up where I left off. Posting to resume next. week.

Hello from the eGrave to any readers that might still be here. It’s been a very unceremonious and slow decent to silence here at subtilitas for the past few months, certainly part of a larger trend from the past year or so of much more infrequent/sporadic posting. 

I wanted to provide a little update since, after 12+ years of running this site, it feels a bit unfair to ignore it further. Most of the absence coincides with starting my own architectural studio (above) about around 6 months ago here in Los Angeles (after disbanding my previous studio, which had been active the past 7 years). If you are interested in my personal work, you can follow our aptly named studio Subtila / on instagram. 

Now that the dust has settled a bit and the new year is here, I’m excited to begin posting again (starting today!) and spending more time sharing projects. Not sure if it will be at the same frequency of years past, but at least reintroducing some daily consistency here (www) and on the instagram. 

Subtilitas has always been an incredibly rewarding hobby since I started it in November of 2009. Even though much has changed since then, from the explosion and variety of architectural websites and social media, for all of its positives and negatives, I always enjoyed coming back to this mostly unchanged and poorly designed basic blog. I hope that in all of the noise out there, it can be a place to continue to find a small selection of interesting projects.

As some may remember, last year I gave a lecture in Lausanne with Corridor regarding the history and objectives of Subtilitas, my personal practice Part Office, thoughts on working in Los Angeles, and a few other side projects. The video is now up, fittingly almost at the 10 year anniversary of the creation of this site. It was nice to reflect on its beginnings, and consider where it stands now within the milieu of online architectural media. Thank you for listening, and I encourage feedback, thoughts, and opinions; please write with any.

tumblr + subtilitas

Some may have heard recently that Tumblr (the platform through which I post) has decided to ban explicit/adult/nsfw content. While that obviously doesn't directly effect Subtilitas, unfortunately their new automated filter system has flagged nearly 100 of my posts, which are all in review, so you might notice some gaps in content (currently the organization is not working and older posts are showing on the main page). I'm not sure how long this will take to resolve, so I am also interested in anyone who might know how to migrate 9 years and over 8,000 posts of  Subtilitas to another platform, as I feel this will continue to worsen before it improves. While I appreciate what I’ve been able to achieve through this platform and thankful for the people I’ve met through it, it is a far cry from the community-oriented and content-creator-supporting site it once was, to where it now seems as though it will take a large amount of focus, time, and energy just to remain online.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

a brief departure from the typical posts here...

while i try not to include my personal work in subtilitas, readers may have noticed content has been a little sparse here lately, largely due to a few large projects wrapping up. one of which is a book i’ve been involved with through the cactus store, which was just released this week.

xerophile is a compendium of desert plant and habitat photography three years in the making. a selection of over five hundred photographs of arguably the rarest and most bizarre plants on earth, photographed in their remote natural habitats over the past 80 years by a global cadre of obsessed cactus aficionados made up of both the amateur and the professional—from phd. botanist to banker, art teacher to cancer researcher. aside from the field photography, we’ve also included several interviews with the explorer's themselves, who’s stories only add to the mystique of their images.
