Daily Commute
Usually when I hear a foreign language on my commute, I try to pinpoint its country of origin. I guess I do it for kicks. But this time around was different. At first glance, I figured this family sitting beside me had roots in China, but my assumptions were completely off. Crossing out the list in my head, I knew they weren’t speaking Cantonese, Mandarin, nor Japanese. As I listened more carefully, ‘chto’ and ‘nyet’ were words I immediately recognized, ‘dah’ as well. RUSSIAN! We ended up chatting and I found out they were third-generation Russian speaking Koreans from Kazakhstan who had immigrated to Canada 10 years ago. "I’m a doctor, and my husband was a doctor," she said in immaculate English. Although she practiced in Kazakhstan, she had to repeat medical school in Canada to re-qualify to be a doctor. I’ve heard this story one to many times and most doctors who have immigrated here are not able to practice and end up working in fields not related to medicine. "I had to start from zero, but I was one of the lucky ones," she said. Unfortunately, I didn’t get her name, as quickly as I discovered her story, I found myself rushing out the door.
