the baby has inherited both parents' difficulty with transitioning from awake to asleep (nobody in our family sleeps easily) and unfortunately the best way to get him to take a nap when he is exhausted but mad about it is to get him into his car seat and take him for a ride. something about being immobilized but also on the move seems to relax him enough to allow him to fall asleep. so when he is showing definite signs of needing a nap we will often suggest a car ride.

but he has become suspicious and realizes we are trying to trick him into falling asleep so you have to come up with a really great reason why we need to get in the car so that his enthusiasm will override his suspicion. like recently my dad was like "hey [baby] I need to drive out to the airport and check the radar to make sure it's working right. do you want to come with me" and the baby was like YEAH!! and then promptly conked out on the way to the airport. (fortunately he is never mad to have been tricked when he wakes up. I guess he's like "oh huh I guess I did need a nap")

so yesterday I persuaded him into the car with the promise of costco oat milk at my house. but he was like "let's not ride around. let's go straight to your house" and when I tried to put his naptime playlist on he said "I don't want to listen to raffi" and when I said "oh! okay what should we listen to then?" he said very firmly "I don't want to listen to ANY THING."

so I was like oh okay that's fine we'll just talk and catch up, I haven't seen you in so long!! and he told me all about his trip to his grandparents' house and tinkerbell and admiral boom and how he wants to be a daddy when he grows up. and then he fell silent which is usually the precursor to him falling asleep

and then like twenty minutes later he suddenly said accusingly "where is your house?"
