Spock and music
One of the things that all band directors say is this: “anyone can play notes on a page. It’s your job to make it musical.”
Making it musical involves putting in the dynamics and the style markings and just the right amount of rubato to give those notes on the page emotion and higher meaning. Emotion! Get it?! Notes on a page do not have emotion, and therefore, a solely logical-based mind should not be able to create good music.
Clearly, it doesn’t seem to have stopped the Vulcans trying. I bet some of them thought they had a good understanding of music, maybe even wrote some, but on principle it is probably horribly mechanical in nature and boooooring for both the player and audience. That’s what makes Spock’s musical talents so very important. I’m 100% sure that his music doesn’t come from his Vulcan side. Music is probably the only way that Spock can access and express his human side, let out the emotions that exist within his subconscious but cannot be processed by his dominant Vulcan side. And not only does he solo well, but he can also communicate with others to create good ensemble sound, which means that he can appreciate musical direction and intention. In other words, he inherently understands what emotions others are trying to convey through their music, as well as how he can help convey that emotion most accurately.
I bet his aural skills are incredible too. Jealousy.
