賭博覇王伝 零ギャン鬼編 (Tobaku Haōden ZERO: Gyanki-hen) 福本伸行 (Fukumoto Nobuyuki), 2012. 株式会社講談社 (Kodansha). (READ RIGHT TO LEFT) Following a hard-fought 910 million yen* gambling win, Zero and his associates throw a party to celebrate. Suezaki, center, is hardly able to contain his glee, and channels Buddha to calm his heart. Itakura, left, is annoyed by the ostentatious display. It's important to note that the panel's right edge is printed close to the book's spine, obscuring some of the entry part of the panel. Despite this, the reader is able to divide the panel into three sections: A glass of alcohol resides in the vicinity of the entry part of the page--representing the sort of worldliness that necessitates Buddha's evocation by the stoic-looking Suezaki in the second third. Suezaki cloisters himself between two word balloons, effectively marking a boundary between his third of the page and the worldliness of the first third. Buddha's word balloon encroaches on Itakura's third of the panel: Suezaki's "devotion" is pressing down on him. Lines in the air appear from the beginning of the panel and intersect at Itakura, both as a way to depict the magnitude of his embarrassment and as a way to shift the focus of the panel from Suezaki to him. Mr. Fukumoto indeed goes on to make Itakura the subject of the next set of panels. The artist's drafting here almost effortlessly conveys the two characters' relationship while also transitioning the narrative. It's skillful. It's efficient. I'd even call it elegant. *A little bit under 12.2 million dollars in August 2012, the month of the book's publication.
