they’re beautiful and very much appreciated today (limited edition red & green vinyl reissue)
seeing sufjan do planetarium last night was really awesome :) i think that poe and i were the two most excited people (at least in our section) because as soon as he walked on stage to fix a couple things before the show, we were leaning forward in our seats whispering "look at him oh my god it's that guy sufjan." jesus. he is an adorable little man. i believe he was wearing one of nico's shirts, because he was wearing a black t-shirt that like.. draped down to above his knees in the front? kind of looked like he was wearing a black shirt and an apron, but it was just the shirt. the show was so amazing. so much better than i had ever dreamed of. they didn't talk a lot in between songs, but they talked in between maybe three songs and the banter was cute. sufjan said "in honor of earth day, we are going to play you the song for earth, our home planet" and then started going on a pretty long rant about how we're all so obsessed with other planets that could provide liveable environments (idk his exact words) but that we've forgotten how precious we are on this planet, in these bodies etc and at the tail end of the rant, nico interrupts and says, "the moral of the story is you're jet lagged" and sufjan did his little bashful smile and looked embarrassed. "am i rambling again?" omg i love you. it was a good show. yay solar system songs by sufjan.
you delicate beautiful princess
let's talk about the best show of my life.
okay first off, shiela was hilarious, adorable, and amazing. her opening act was only fifteen minutes, but it was so adorable.
the first time i started crying was when "that was the worst christmas ever" was played. one of my favorite things was when sufjan started playing sister winter, and after the first couple chords were played, you could hear the audience all make that pained sound i KNOW you make when sister winter comes on. everyone does it. you know that sound. it's like a pained, pathetically soft groan because you know what's about to happen.
i think two of my favorite fun songs of the night were "I Am Santa's Helper" and "Mr. Frosty Man." during I Am Santa's Helper, while rosie was singing it, sufjan was speaking into the microphone saying, "i do things for santa. you do what santa tells you to do" and a couple verses later after rosie sang "i am santa's helper, you are santa's slave!" he said, "they're basically the same thing, but different in principle." so funny. during mr. frosty man, rosie was dressed as a snowman, and she was holding up a fake chainsaw oh my god. she said, "there's no room for frosty in here, it's too hot, and mr. frosty is MAD!" she started attacking this light up angel doll on stage with the chainsaw during the song. after the song was over, sufjan said "i told rosie to attack nedelle during the song, not the doll" and was laughing. they're such cute friends. mr. frosty and i am santa's helper are really fun high energy songs, and almost kind of scary-cool, because the lighting was flashing and dark red. i love that kind of lighting.
a bubble machine started going off during vito's ordination song, and while it was eerily quiet with only sufjan's voice singing, a bubble popped on my nose. that was the second time i started crying. during one wheel of christmas song.. i can't remember which.. but sufjan walked to the edge of the stage and shook a couple people's hands in the front row and he SHOOK MINE. immediately afterward i starting happy crying. of course. why wouldn't i? god he played happy karma christmas AND justice delivers its death. he got so into happy karma christmas. at one point on stage, he said "i need to grow up. it's like perpetual peter pan up here." i love you
he made a lot of faces whenever he'd mess up. he was drinking tea out of a plastic red cup. he had this weird space blanket things that was taped together with orange gaff tape and blown up, and he was swinging it around on stage, saying things like "this balloon is the christmas spirit." he threw it off stage and ro, brooke and i all three-way caught it. now it's in my room! ro and i are going to split it. christmas unicorn was so much fucking fun. i was dancing like crazy. the second he put on that stupid helmet with the wings and horn, the audience went crazy. he's so much fun to watch up close. i love you
toward the end of the show, in the middle of the encore between songs i think, he said "so, hollywood on a tuesday night..." and i half-yelled "craaazy!" because i was practically standing directly across from him, and he giggled and said "hehehe.. crazy" into the microphone and i FUCKING LOST IT!!!!
for the encore he played UFO, john wayne gacy jr, casimir pulaski day, and come on feel the illinoise. it was all indescribable. i couldn't soak up enough of the atmosphere, the music, the energy, the spirit, etc. the audience was quietly singing along with him for every song. normally things like that bother me, but it was just so sincere and heartfelt that i couldn't help but enjoy it. the audience was all great. everyone standing behind me was extremely friendly and happy. this girl who was standing next to me, who must have been in her mid twenties, was having a great time. it was sweet to watch out of the corner of my eye. when he started playing john wayne gacy jr, she made this little whimper and covered most of her face and sighed. so fucking sweet. i love you
after the encore was over and sufjan did all of his audience clapping and bowing, he said "thank you all and i love you very much" and god just typing that made me start to tear up.
it was the happiest night of my life. every time i think about how sufjan shook my hand, i feel so fulfilled and happy. i keep tearing up every time i think about sufjan
how dare sufjan think he can write lyrics such as "sometimes i think i'm just a phantom, loneliness grows deep within me" OR!!! "how have i wasted my life trusting the pleasure it gives here on earth" and get away with it. sufjan stevens is the absolute worst
