"did you really believe that hooking up a few times would change me? that i'd suddenly want a relationship with you? because newsflash, i don't."

“you’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” lexie muttered when she realized her friends were nowhere in sight. her fingers threaded through her hair as her heartbeat thudded hard in her chest. a creepy, supposedly haunted cabin in the middle of the woods—and they ditched her. fantastic. darkness pressed in from every direction, and the only light she had was her flashlight… with her phone as a backup. not that it mattered—she was deep enough in the woods that she had zero service. of course. this was exactly how people died in horror movies.

it was a saturday evening, and ethan was stretched out on his couch with a beer in one hand and his phone in the other. the tv played a movie he’d been trying to finish for weeks, but—like always—something else kept stealing his attention. scrolling aimlessly, he somehow wound up in his ex-girlfriend’s messages… or at least, he thought it was her. a reckless impulse hit him, the kind that came a little too easily after a long week and a cold drink. he typed out a message and hit send, a satisfied grin tugging at his lips as if he’d just made the best decision of his life. even though he absolutely hadn’t.
