Okay, so I talked this a little bit in previous posts, but what's going on is that Zuko killed his father and then took the throne without ever joining up with the Gaang. So he never had the chance to form individual positive relationships with them, they never became friends, they never built trust, and the gaang never came to see Zuko as one of their own.

Cast your mind back to the Book Two finale. This is where Zuko's relationship with the gaang ended. Katara still smarts from what she views as a profound betrayel, when Zuko sided with his sister, after sharing a moment of understanding and commiseration over the losses of theit mothers. She views him as untrustworthy, and a danger to the people she cares about, and consequentally, to the fragile peace Zuko himself helped bring about. And Zuko does not exactly have a ready way to build trust with her. Or, as Zuko would think of it, get her not to hate him.

Sokka and Zuko likewise have a lot of baggage, not least of which is the fact that Sokka killed Zuko's sister, something both Zuko and Sokka feel differently about moment by moment. And of course, Zuko also killed his father, and if you think he doesn't have large and complicated emotions about this that he struggles to process or understand, well he does.

Aang wants to think the best of Zuko, and to trust him, and he's working on it, but that trust is still fragile, built as it is on a foundation of Aang's deliberate and self-chosen optimism. And Toph never really had to deal with Zuko at his worst, and she likes his uncle, so she's more or less willing to play nice. And Suki only knows him as the guy who burned down her village and released her from prison, so she's willing to see where this goes.

Basically, they are not friends. They aren't enemies, but they don't really like or trust Zuko, and there is nothing he can do about that, other than keep doing the right thing as Firelord. And half the time he has no idea what the right thing is. And with his uncle gone, because he has to be, and with only Mai and Ty Lee there that he can rely on, well, it's lonely at the top.

I love when Sokka gets to be a smart guy. How's he doing in 100-years-past-verse?

Sokka, Suki, and Sangmu have all just used the power of flight and large animals to bully their way into a conversation with General Weng from the Council of Five. Now comes the hard part. Sokka, with his gift of the gab has to convince General Weng, and then the other generals, that they want to actually help. And he has to sell the time travel story, and also there is the fact that in his timeline, Ba Sing Se took almost another century to fall. He did consider lying about that fact, but his experience, the lies always come out, and then it's a whole mess.

Weng tries to test Sokka on military future history, and Sokka has to confess that he has no idea, since he didn't exactly have lessons on the subject, growing up in the southern water tribe, and after the war was over the nitty gritty of military history was not his first priority of things to learn about, and boy he sure wishes that Iroh had come back to the past with them right now.

Wait, General Weng says. Wasn't Iroh the guy you said almost conquered Ba Sing Se?

Sokka's all like, yeah, but don't worry. He got cool.

Sangmu is watching this all in horror, but Suki, is like, this is fine.

Ultimately, Weng decides that Sokka is probably telling the truth, because if he were lying about this kind of thing, he would probably have like actually come up with a better cover story, or at least had a nice smooth clean timeline to give him. Which means that Weng is going to have to explain this to the rest of the Council of Five.

I know I have asked this before but please could you do five headcanons for the gaang age swap au?? if you don't mind

Universe tag: #Gaang age swap AU.

1. Let's talk about the Serpent's Pass and Ba Sing Se. I've been glossing over that until now, because it's a sad and tangled mess. Zuko and Iroh are traveling with the Gaang at this point, and when they meet a pair of peasants (be nice, Zuko) who are robbed of their tickets and passports, they too are dragooned into crossing the Serpent's Pass. Iroh however, knows exactly why the Serpent's Pass is named that, having lost quite a few ships on that lake that were meant to function as his supply lines during his six hundred day seige. He helpfully informs the Avatar of this fact.

2. The peasants lose what little wits they have (what did I say about being nice, Zuko? Besides, it's little wit or few wits, not little wits. Bad grammar makes you sound like a peasant.) and the situation is not improved when an old friend of the Avatar and his companions shows up, a young woman named Suki, who is working as part of the port security force. She grew up on Kyoshi Island, and has plenty of experience with big sneaky water monsters and she wants nothing to do with this one, and thanks going over the Serpent's Pass is a terrible idea. Not to worry, Iroh's troops figured out how to handle a serpent emergency. He buys for dirt cheap two elderly turtle-oxen from a refugee who wasn't allowed to bring them into the city, and was struggling to persuade the ferry cooks to buy them for meat. Then, when the lake monster starts getting too close for comfort, Iroh quick gives a shot of lightning to the first turtle-ox and Toph uses earthbending to launch it far into the lake. The serpent takes off after the splash, finds dinner, and is distracted. They keep going, and when the serpent is done, they do the same with the second turtle-ox. They get across safely, and Aang finds the whole experience a powerful reinforcement for his commitment to vegetarianism.

3. Once the peasants and their new bundle of joy are gone, finally, (Nephew, really!) and Suki has hitched a ferry ride back to the other side of the lake, Iroh quietly tells the group that they can't let anyone in Ba Sing Se know who he or his nephew really are. They're just friends of the Avatar. No names. That night, once Sokka and Zuko are asleep, he tells Aang, Katara, and Toph about the seige of Ba Sing Se. Toph tells him she already knows.

4. Zuko spends their entire time in Ba Sing Se being, as he sees it, disregarded, disrespected, and ignored. For example, after that Joo Dee lady leaves, Zuko helpfully informs the Avatar that he wouldn't have to wait if this were the Fire Nation. He would get to see the Firelord right away, and sure he'd be drugged and in chains, but at least he wouldn't have to wait six to eight weeks for some bureaucrat to decide to let him see the monarch. The Avatar laughs and ruffles his hair. See, such disrespect. His uncle and the Avatar have him right where they want him and now that they do, they just want to treat him like a helpless child!

5. Is it any wonder that when later, his sister asks for his help, and treats him as able to give help, he says yes?

Hello! I was reading back through the Neither Queen Nor Pawn AU posts and wondered if you would be willing to show us Zuko's rescue... Or whatever else the Gaang were going to find in Ozai's apartment.

We're past Zuko's rescue, so this is what happens next. Continued from: [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], and Neither Queen nor Pawn: [Link].

1. The next morning, the world crashes back in. Sokka, or maybe Suki, must have called Iroh, and he and Aang are there for breakfast. All of them, Mai, Tom-Tom, Zuko, Toph, Ty Lee, Iroh, Katara, Aang, Sokka, and Suki are all clustered around the kitchen table, scrunched in on the couch, or sprawling on cushions on the floor in the tiny appartment Sokka, Katara, Suki, Toph and Ty Lee share. At some point, Ty Lee must have taken a proper shower and put on her pajamas. They're pink. She has on actual bunny slippers. Katara has a blue fuzzy bathrobe on over sweatpants and a faded teashirt. The rest of them slept in their clothes. Everything looks so bizarrely normal, when everything is about to change forever.

2. They've got, well, a whole pile of problems, so many, it's hard to even think about how to untangle them, much less solve them. Iroh's apartment is no longer safe. None of them can go back there, not with Ozai on the hunt. Mai, Zuko, Iroh, Ty Lee, and Aang can't do anything under their own names without Ozai finding them, and that means all of their GEDs and college courses are right down the drain. Fortunately it's winter break, and it's not like any of them registered for classes yet, but still. Mai wants to scream. And then there's the fact that Mai kidnapped Tom Tom. It doesn't matter how terrible her parents are,they are his parents and they signed him up for Ozai's school, and legally speaking, Mai kidnapped her brother.

3. Iroh thinks the best defense is a good offence, and a good cover story. Ozai is a cult leader. His school is a cover for a Cult in which he says the children all have magic powers. They escaped,and then he tracked them down and kidnapped his own son at gunpoint. When Mai and their friends went to rescue him, They found Mai's brother and rescued him too. Having all grown up in a cult, it didn't occur to them to go to the police, but aftwrwards, They went to Iroh, who they trust, and he talked them into going to the police. Ozai also kidnapped Aang before faking the gass explosion at the monastery where he had been living with his grandfather. The story has the added benefit of being almost true. The only thing they're lying about is their powers not bei g real. They can get Ozai put in jail and maybe get into witness protection.

4. Mai is so taken with how tidy the whole solution is, she forgets to worry if prison could even hold Ozai, and even Azula, with their powers.

5. Throughout Iroh's proposal, Suki has been cradling an oversized mug of hot chocolate, taking occasional sips. When Iroh finishes talking, she sets the mug down on the counter with a harsh clink. "No," she says, just as harshly. They can't go to the police. They can't turn Ozai in. If they did, the federal government would quickly figure out that Ozai's powers were real, that their powers were real, and that sounds like a great way to wind up dead, or disappeared into a research facility like the one Suki grew up in. And she is not going back.

From worst to best, how good do you think the Avatar the Last Airbender characters would be at making dumplings?

Sokka: These are the worst things you have ever put in your mouth.

Ty Lee: She doesn't know how she got into this mess, but she's tired, she's cold, she has dough gunk in her hair, and everything smells like rotten fish. She's crying. She just wants to go to bed.

Suki: She just never learned to cook, okay? She was busy. But she thinks her granddad made them with island hog-hen, and, ooh, she could add honey. That goes good in everything. And salt. Salt enhances flavor, right? She wants them to be really flavorful, so it's got to be a whole lot of salt. And, what do you mean the dough has to be cooked? She thought you just left them to dry or something.

Zuko: Look, all I'm saying is he tried. He did. But the dough is somehow both hard and burned, and also runny and undercooked, with lumps of un-mixed-in four, and the filling is a little uh, raw in the middle. These are dangerous dumplings. Do not consume.

Azula: I'm sure it's reasonable to assume that as a princess with no need or desire for a culinary education, Azula would make terrible dumplings. This is false. She simply sees no point in making them at all when there are other people to make them for her. This absence of dumplings puts her ahead of the previous dumpling makers by default.

Toph: Toph also sees no reason to attempt to make dumplings, but I like her better than Azula.

Hakoda: His dumplings are dumplings, and edible. They're quite nice in seaweed broth.

Bato: Bato's dumplings are also fairly run of the mill, but the rest of the warriors agree they're slightly better than Hakoda's.

Iroh: Iroh started cooking late in life but has achieved a surprising degree of competency. His dumplings are delicious, though nothing special, something he'll tell you himself, while serving you the best tea you've ever had to go with them.

Mai: Mai is a dark ostrich-horse. Class-wise she has always been in this odd in-between place, with her noble father from an impoverished family and her well off merchant's daughter mother. Her mother used to leave most of the cooking to servants, but the most important stuff she made herself. But Mai was noble, and exempt. Her mother wanted her to be exempt. But of course, her aunt thinks that hog-henwash, and if she wants to live on her own she needs to be able to feed herself. So Mai learns. She's already patient and observant, and knows her way around a knife, so it comes easy to her. Sometimes she gets bored, and you can find little carved carrot flowers inside her dumplings, for extra flair.

Ursa: Ursa is an excellent all around cook, and finds joy in simple dishes like the dumplings she used to have as a child, back in Hira'a.

Aang: He used to cook cakes and sweet things with Monk Gyatso. After the war, when he's searching for a sense of his old home, he started trying to recreate recipes. He actually gets really into it and develops the skills of a good solid cook, and his air temple dumplings are wonderful. He also learned some vegetarian Water Tribe dishes, and even Sokka says they're not bad, even if they would be better with some meat.

Katara: Katara is a superior dumpling maker. They are perfect, tender, fluffy, chewy. Any fillings or sauce are always a perfect balance of flavors. They are delightful. Unfortunately, Sokka is a thief and stole the last plate of them.

Kanna: Look, nobody makes better dumplings than their Gran-Gran, not even Katara.

The Gaang wakes up a hundred years in the past AU

1. When we last left off with Sokka and Suki, they were headed north, along with Sangmu, to Ba Sing Se. They know this is going to be difficult. For all the Fire Nation military is tramping around the northwestern Earth Kingdom with impunity, in the lands traditionally controlled by the Earth King, even when Ba Sing Se's power was at a low ebb, it's going to be nearly nine decades before the Fire Nation mounts a credible expedition to conquer the impenetrable city. Ba Sing Se is a tough nut to crack, and they know it. And also they have no idea when the Dai Li became the Dai Li they knew and hated. So they go into Ba Sing Se warily.

2. They have one advantage they didn't expect: Sozin used the comet to slaughter the Air Nomads only a few years ago. It's not only in living memory, it's in very recent memory. And no one knows how the Fire Nation did it or if they could do it again, soon. And bringing an Air Nomad survivor with them makes that point without needing to say anything.

3. So they fly into Ba Sing Se and decide to stay the heck away from any of the checkpoints or gates. Sokka did that once, and it was a nightmare, and they have a sky bison this time, so no. Not doing that again. So they land right in front of the palace, because they might as well just take a stick and whack that spider-hornets' nest right off that tree. Guards come rushing out like, well, like outraged spider-hornets, and Sokka yells down that, yo, they're ambassadors from the Avatar, here to talk to the Earth King, or you know, whoever's actually in charge if it's not the king, about important military matters. Suki just puts her head in her hands.

4. The thing is, they can't arrest Sokka, Suki, or Sangmu, because every time they try, Sangmu just has Sunshine fly them out of reach. Same with when they start trying to hurl boulders at them. It's all enough to make Sokka very very glad the Air Nomads never went on their own conquering rampage. But the guards are determined, stubborn jerks, and it takes a while for them to give up.

5. Finally, finally they send out a man in fancy Generally armor, who sure enough introduces himself as General Weng. "Hey," asks Sokka. "Are you part of the Council of Five?" "Yes?" "Great! You're someone we can work with!"

1. Sokkamind escapes Azula by the skin of his teeth, and frantically uses his communicator to call Katara. She shows up driving the invisible car just in time, and they screech off into the distance, just as Azula hits streetlevel and starts trying to set them on fire with her laser eyes. Why. Why did he give her laser eyes?

2. I don't know, Katara asks. Why did you give her laser eyes? Because Metroman had laser eyes, of course, but Sokkamind does not want to examine too closely why he misses Metroman so much. Katara also is a bit reluctant to examine how much she missed Aang and his dreamy laser eyes.

3. But anyway, they tumble out of the car at the lab/lair, breathing hard, rushing to get inside and lock the lair down to plan their next move, and who do they find at the supposedly secret entrance (this is your fault Katara, with your stupid welcome mat! Well I wouldn't need one if you didn't keep forgetting where it was!) to the lair? Why it's an extremely irate Suki! And an equally irate woman who introduces herself as Mai, the girlfriend of the actual Zuko, you know, the guy you disappeared and stole the identity of? And another woman who says she's Mai's friend, Ty Lee, who is here for moral support. Moral support, an alibi, beating the crap out of Sokkamind... she's flexible.

4. So, as the shambles of Sokkamind's life come crashing down around him, he and Katara try to push past the three women, into the lair and initiate the emergency lockdown protocol, but they just sort of end up pushing all of them into the lair together before the lockdown walls slam down. Before the women can go back to threatening Sokkamind, every monitor in the lab flicks on, to show Azula, in her new, and admittedly pretty sharp costume, with perfect makeup that even Ty Lee has to admit looks fierce, lounging carelessly on the Mayor's desk in City Hall, informing them that there's a new supervillain in town, and Metrocity has a new ruler now. Sokkamind can try to challenge her for it but she'll only crush him like the little blue insect that he is.

5. Then the screens go black, and there is dead silence. Before anybody can start yelling again, they hear a faint voice coming from one of the downstairs broom closets, saying, "Hello? Is somebody there? Was that you, Azula? Seriously Azula, let me out, this isn't funny!"

Continuation of the Garth Nix Old Kingdom fusion AU, which could use some love: [Link], [Link], [Link], and [Link].

1. Let's talk Toph, Suki, Mai, and Ty Lee. I've barely touched on Mai and Ty Lee, and I haven't mentioned Toph or Suki at all. Toph was the daughter of a wealthy family from Belisaere, who had the good sense to flee to Ancelstierre when Ozai first killed the royal family a hundred years ago. Perhaps they were the last of the family to have any sense. Certainly Lao and Poppy Bei Fong have never shown any. They have done everything they can to assimilate into Ancelstierre society, and have kept their daughter close, not allowing her to attend school, but only study with a governess. It probably doesn't matter anyway because Toph is blind, and it's not like she's ever going to find a husband anyway. And this is probably why Lao allows it when his wife, in a fit of superstition, has their daughter baptized with a charter mark.

2. Toph comes from no great family tradition of strong charter magic, and the only charter instruction she gets is from slimy old Master Yu, who is there to teach her little spells to amuse and delight, nothing useful or powerful. But he teaches her a charter spell that can read books aloud to her, and with that, he unlocks the world for her. Her parents have books on charter magic hidden away in a dusty corner of her father's office, and one by one, they find their way into a hole in her bedroom wall, hidden behind a painting. Soon, she has far surpassed Master Yu, and she has to work hard to keep her power secret.

3. Neither Mai nor Ty Lee remember their parents. They know the vague outlines. Their parents never gave them a charter baptism, but instead traded them to necromancers in exchange for temporary safety for their villages. It happens all the time. Usually it's poor and orphaned kids, but not always. Their parents almost certainly think they're dead. That's what usually happens to kids like them, it's not like a necromancer has much use for a living child. But they were lucky, or maybe very very unlucky, because their parents traded them to a necromancer in Ozai's service, and he decided they would be good playmates for his host's children.

4. It wasn't like there was ever an adult who is responsible for them. They grew up on the edges of Ozai's forces, scrabbling and clawing their way through life. There were other kids too at first, but one by one, the other kids disappeared, killed as necromantic sacrifices. But somehow, it was never their turn to die, maybe because Azula liked them so much, or maybe because they picked up enough free magic to start looking like they might be useful. By the time Zuko makes his great escape, both girls are powerful free magic sorceresses. And both know that there is a dangerous trade they make every moment of their lives, because the more power they have, the more useful they are to Ozai, but the more his other sorcerers and necromancers see them as threats. There is no safety for them, only the constant watchfulness of wolves in a cage.

5. Suki is the daughter of the leader of the Kyoshi people, one of the many northern peoples called barbarians by ignorant Old Kingdomers. She leads a band of warriors, and it's she who first finds four Old Kingdomers trespassing on her people's territory. And one of them, an old woman, carries a dark and unsettling power, and sometimes, deep in her her eyes, Suki swears she can see a fire burning her up from within. She wants this woman off her land, but almost more than that, she wants to shield the three children with her from whatever this woman has planned for them.
