And finally, in PARIS, we were delighted by an homage to Brassai’s graffitti series, witnessed a nod to the works of Ellsworth Kelly and Constanin Brancusi and revelled in a celebration of Aztec, Native American and Egyptian embroidery.
In MILAN, we marvelled at collections inspired by architectural history and antiquity, the political wall art of Mexican muralists such as Diego Riverawork, the illustrations of Erté and the poetry of Ovid.
In LONDON, we saw prints inspired by the Art Deco period, tops emblazoned with religious iconography, tattoo designs by LA artist Alex Garcia and Nottingham’s forgotten lace industry regain the world’s attention.
In NEW YORK, designers were inspired by kinetic and contemporary art, the Pre-Raphaelite Era and the works of celebrated LA ceramist Ken Price.
INSPIRED LOOKS FROM SS14
Every year the new collections capture our hearts, our imaginations and invariably our bank accounts. The collections presented at the SS14 Fashion Weeks were no different.
In New York, we were greeted with functional luxury; in London, prints came back with pizazz; in Milan, there was a riot of colour and Paris was polished as always. However different or similar the many collections were, they had all started out life as an idea born from inspiration.
In honour of the collections inspired by art, artists and artisans, we selected our favourite looks from SS14 and asked four incredibly talented illustrators to draw them in their individual style. The result… great works of art inspired by the great works of fashion.
