i know nothing about these things but how much should the film have done for it to have a sequel?

well usually it would take making a profit on the first movie for them to consider financing a sequel. they spent $60million on city of bones, for them to at least break even they would have most likely needed to make at least $30million by the time this weekend is over, since opening weekend is when movies make most of their money. with the way things are going it looks like they are going to make a huge loss from city of bones, so it would literally be financial suicide for them to make city of ashes.

obviously there are other things to take into consideration like dvd sales and merch but i still don't think they'll make much of a profit even after all of that. i'm guessing they started production on city of ashes so soon because they just assumed that city of bones would do well, but they're probably reconsidering that now. 

it's annoying because the books get better as the series goes along and now it looks like we wont even get to see that come to life sigh. but idk, they might surprise me and make the second one even if they don't make a profit from this one.
