My Granddad’s roses.
I got four dahlia tubers at the Seattle garden show earlier this year, and they are now all in the ground: success!
I have a photo of each header (showing the flower blossom, name and grower) lying next to where the tuber was planted in the yard. Each spot got a wooden tag with the specific varietal name on it too because I need to get used to them being where they all just got planted.. These will bloom from August until first frost, which usually arrives somewhere between mid-October and mid-November. I will need to water these to support them through the summer and get blooms.
The red and white Magically Dun is next to the passionflower on the southwest corner of the house. Enchantress (darker purple) is near where my former housemate’s cat is buried. Lisa Lisa (purple tips) is in the same quadrant of yard, but near the walkway to the front door.
The Rae Meister dahlia is planted in the back yard, near the pear tree. The dinner plate dahlias do well in that same area, but were planted in mixed light and they snap their stems reaching for full sun with those huge flowers. These are smaller blooms, and planted in a less over-shaded spot.

“Why do I do this to myself...?” Sakura sighed as she walked out of her class.
She’d had a good month or so of summer vacation before her first round of summer classes got started. Admittedly, even if she hadn’t elected to stick around for summer courses, she probably would’ve stayed in Twilight Town anyways. The pinkette missed her parents, and above all else, she wanted to see her mentor and tell her everything she’d experienced in her first semester at school, but her hometown held nothing else for her. What would she do at home?
Sakura was better off getting ahead in her coursework. Still, the weather was just so nice right now... She’d give anything to take a break on the beach. Oh well... maybe later.
As the pre-med student made her way to her dorm, she realized she’d been crossing through a part of the campus that she hadn’t taken much time to explore before. She hadn’t had any classes around here until now so it made sense that she would come across something as new to her as the university’s greenhouse.
Surely, like many other places on campus, it would be okay to peek in and see what was going on inside.
Taking a chance, Sakura walked into the greenhouse and was immediately met with its humidity. It wasn’t too bad, but it was a noticeable change from the air quality outside.
There were so many plants and flowers! Sakura was distracted with all the various colors and shapes and hadn’t noticed the room was actually in use by another student until she caught the other girl’s movements out of the corner of the eye.
A sharp gasp left the pinkette and she jumped, clutching her books to her chest in surprise.
“W-Aah!! H-Hi! Uhh.. S-Sorry!! I didn’t mean to interrupt your work! I was just, you know, passing through and uh I saw the greenhouse and thought I’d take a peek, but i’ll leave if I’m bothering you ahaha...”
Love the dahlias this time of year.
Grass seed, organically produced. No labor, no mowing, just enjoy the blossoms.
