My least favorite gardening task is lawn care. Growing grass is worse than watching water boil, but someone’s got to do it.
Grass seeds
@canadiankazz said to @ask-drferox: G'day Dr Ferox. I just watched a rather interesting video about another Aussie vet removing grass seeds from dogs' ears and toes. (Poor things.) Do you have any tips or advice on how to prevent grass seeds from causing problems for dogs or cats? (Other than keeping them inside all spring.)
Grass seeds are horrible little things, and they cause an unfair amount of pain for unfortunate dogs that get them stuck somewhere. (Cats seem better at removing them before they cause a problem).
We’re in the middle of grass seed season now, in fact here’s one I removed recently. It was resting just next to the last bone in the toe of a dog, which was going mad trying to get at it, even on pain relief medication (which suggested something was, in fact, stuck in there).
These grass seeds are arrow shaped, with multiple prickly spines originating from a single point. They grip the fur easily, and once attached will only move forward. That included forward through the skin.
This video clearly demonstrates how (not mine).
Grass seeds can migrate up the leg from the toes, through the lung and chest wall if inhaled, all sorts of interesting places in the groin and can get stuck in genitals. They are nasty little buggers.
The best way to prevent them is just mow your grass! The plants have to reach a certain height before they go to seed, and if you cut them down before they do that, then there wont be any seeds to get stuck.
Secondly, avoid tall grassy areas when taking the dogs for a walk. That should be fairly obvious.
It also helps to keep the fur short, especially in problem areas like the feet and around the ear openings, so that you can physically check the dog each day and remove grass seeds that they have picked up, but before they’ve entered the skin.
Some regions have a much bigger grass seed problem than others, but if you even think there’s a grass seed problem, best to get it checked asap, wherever it is. It’s much easier to find them in ears or up noses straight away before they damage the tissue, and elsewhere on the body when the abscess is small compared to when its big and it could be lurking anywhere within it.
They’re such annoying little things. You either get them immediately on your first try looking for them, or you look for an hour, give up, and the next vet to try gets them instantly.
