Bernina has a free pattern called "Betty", a nice blouse with an interesting neckline, online - well, i like it. To download it, you can register for the newsletter, but don´t need to (the first button is for the newsletter - the text underneath is for the direct download.)

Available in sizes 36-48 (in the instruction it says 36-48 and on the pattern itself it says 34-48 but size 34 is not available in the pattern, so the instruction is correct.) The instruction is german, but i plan to sew one for me and write a blog post for it. The pattern is available in A4-Format and US-Letter format. The measurments are given in cm and inches. Size 36= BU: 84/TU:67/HU:93(cm) Bust:33/Waist:26,4/Hip:36,6(inches) Size 48= BU:110/TU:93/HU:114(cm) Bust:43,3/Waist:37/Hip:44,9(inches)

Summer Blouse Study: Wing Collar Dots

Last week I showed my first try at New Look 6598 with an added collar for the v-neck version. This is the one I had meant to make: the wing collar version. Yes, it’s the same silly dot pattern with the lion sketch centered down the front.

Wing collars are harder to make as they require you to seam together 2 pieces at a right angle that you have cut into up to the reinforced seam line. That makes them harder to look after too as the cut weakens the fabric and ironing finesse is needed to handle the shape which results. If you look at the pattern illustration you will see the center seam line of the collar, and if you look at my checked pattern pieces below you will see that piece to the collar to the back neck facing is a challenge, taking some careful basting and sewing. On the other hand, the winged collar has a jaunty flair which it gets from the shape that results. Which is why I think they are worth the trouble. 

I did 3 other things to this version. I took the blouse in an inch in circumference as it was a little too loose for my taste. Because the armhole seemed too low, I raised the arm scythe a 1/2 an inch which also meant shortening the sleeve pattern and the front pieces. Then I shortened the entire blouse 3 inches.  If I wore pants, the blouse would have been fine as made a 2-to-3 ratio blouse to pants, i.e. the Golden Ratio. But I will wear this with skirts this summer and the resting the ratio of blouse to skirt was closer was close to the awkward 1-to-1. Cutting off 3 inches shifted the ratio to 2-to-3. 

As you can see, I am now working on a checked version, cut on the bias, which I will blog about when I get it done. Surprise-surprise 😄 My drawstring skirt can double as a blouse. Perfect for when summer comes around 🌞 Although, I'll have to make sure to wear sunscreen on my shoulders 😏

Summer Blouse Experiment 2020: Blue Checks and Snaps

I have now blogged this blouse experiment in 2 styles in the same print, then coral check on the bias, and now in a blue check (patterns are Mondays, so you can flip back and check them out on the blog). Cut on the straight of grain, the blue version is a crisp version that has benefited from the prior experiments. So it is 3 inches shorter than the original pattern, the armhole is 1/2 inches higher, and lastly the front darts have been taken in a 1/4 inch at the waist.

This time I tried two experiments with avoiding the darts. I prefer a tailored fit, but the more shape you add to the bodice of a pattern, the more you have to be careful when ironing. And all these are 100% cotton. So you see here in the second image on the left side, the snap version and then below that the closeup. So why reject snaps? Biggest reason: they come undone. Yes, you might cope with that with bigger snaps, but as they are purely utilitarian, I didn’t want to go that route, and they still might come undone. Having to think about your clothing not functioning --wrapped dresses, you know we are talking about you too--is no way to enjoy your day. I cannot even imagine trying to snap the back ones if they came undone. I also tried creating eyelets along the dart path and then drawing a cord through them. There is no photo of that experiment because it was so ugly, I pulled the cord out almost instinctively, thinking, Yikes! The fabric bunched inside under the cord and it was a mess. Again, you could try a decorative set of ties, but since this buttons in the front already and since my goal is emphasis on the face, not the waistline, I will skip that. So.... back to darts and the tidy, tailored look you see here.

I managed to find some perfect square buttons in blue mother of pearl in my button box, so I positioned the buttonholes a wee bit off their original locations in order that the buttons would fit right within the check weave.
