Summer Escapes: The Creek

We are fortunate to have friends with a beautiful creek running through their backyard, who invited us over on a hot day for creek play. Most of our summer escapes involve getting wet, the pool, the sprayground, but nothing beats natural water. We've been back from the beach for only a few days, and we happily find ourselves back in the water. This time with the trees and mud, flipping rocks for toads and fish rather than seashells and crab. Different, but so much the same. That heavy smell of east coast summer, hot with life, so rich and thick in the air. Makes me want to run for a copy of Huckleberry Finn and crash in the hammock. Maybe I will find the time.

Summer Escapes: The Pool

Honestly, the city pool is not my favorite place. The thought of going there makes me anxious, and post pool recovery can be tedious. It is loud, crowded, hot, has a high potential for injury and loss, and comes with the added bonus of wearing a bathing suit.

Yet somehow the pool remains a summer essential. Largely because the children seem to thrive on the heady mix of sun, water and exercise. They simply LOVE it. And when I get in the right frame of mind I can find some love there too. Cool water. High pitched giggles. Blowing whistles. Ice cream truck music. Chattering teeth. Chlorine soaked towels. Exhausted kids that fall asleep with their mouths open. Its not so bad. Not so bad at all.

Summer Escapes: The Kiddie Pool

Sunshine and water, such a basic combination. At the beach, the pool, or in the backyard it always works. Just add a few children and you'll be feeling that wild summer energy for sure. In this case, six children, an inflatable pool, and a hose. A timely reminder that summer is easy, cheap and uncomplicated. Just head outside, and find a fun way to cool off.
