because i can't help myself, here's a little snippet to my @jilychallenge july one shot!

He’s reading what looks like a romance novel. 

She turns her head to the side, as if the angle of her head will determine whether or not the bright pink and blue novel in his hands is indeed romance specific. She shouldn’t judge, not really, who cares if a young man prefers to read romance for his summer reading than some sort of dark and twisty thriller that doesn’t really make any logical sense. Her head is resting in her palm, her elbow on the recently cleaned bar surface. He’s cute - the newcomer, has slightly wavy dark hair that curls behind his ears, a very obvious well-formed chest and stomach and if she determines by the way he’s spread out nicely on the sun lounger, he’s quite tall. She can’t see his eyes or nose though, which everyone knows is make or break when concluding attractiveness.

Howdy, Moony!

Do you think I can pull off starting letters with ‘howdy’? Don’t answer that, I’ll ask Pete. He’ll say yes.

Anyway, for the rest of the summer when you write to me you have to tell Muggsy to fly in my bedroom window right at 5PM, or I won’t get it (and Mug will come back smelling faintly of bubotuber pus). It’s a long story.

No, it’s not. Padfoot moved in with me because his mum sucks one. She’s been sending him daily Howlers, which my mum’s been chucking over the back fence, but “what’s the point of marrying rich if I can’t let my muscles atrophy?” So the new plan is Confunding Charms and bubotuber pus, and I’m to tell my mates.

Also, you’re spending furry little problem week here starting tonight. I’ve sent this after five, so if you write back to say you’re not coming I won’t get it, and if you stand me up without sending word, that’d make you a shit friend, I’d feel utterly betrayed, never want to see you again, etc., etc.

Bring your broom!

P.S. For the record, I’m not trying out ‘howdy’ because Evans likes rugged American men. On a totally unrelated note, what do you know about John Wayne?

“Are you free now?”

His throat made a strange squealing noise, and his hand jumped to his hair. "Am I ever! For you, freer than I've ever been before in my life."

"Perfect," she said, "How much do you charge?"

He blinked. "Uh... I don't... I'm not... what?!"

"For an all-day lesson, I mean."

"Oh! You meant...because I'm behind this counter, of course, you assumed...you're looking for a surfing lesson?"

"Yes?"

"Right. Right, right, right. And I'm a surfing instructor. Obviously. Because why else would I be standing behind this counter? It's not like I'm some weirdo who just has a compulsive need to break every single rule I see," he muttered, eyes darting to a sign on the counter that read, "EMPLOYEES ONLY".

"Uh..." she frowned suspiciously.

"What do I charge!" he said quickly, turning those bright hazel eyes back onto her and derailing her train of thought. "Good question."

"So you are definitely a surfing instructor then?"

"I mean, yeah. Of course. And I charge a very official amount, which is, um..."

"Er, before you price it, you should know it's in service of a greater cause."

"Sorry?"

"I'm not just cavorting about on the waves for my own amusement. I'm fighting misogyny."

He grinned, leaning toward her. "Really? Brilliant, tell me everything."
