The Optician of Lampedusa

Extract:

“ ‘Get back! Get back over here! Quickly!’ screamed the optician. 

Back up on the cabin roof, the optician had fallen on his knees and was clinging to the little barrier with his right arm while waving frantically at the men with his left, screaming at them to move back. Matteo and Francesco were losing their footing as the boat swayed violently; they were shouting and pushing the men to the other side of the boat.

‘Move! We’ll tip over! Move!’

Galata shuddered dangerously before sagging back into the water, belching with her overload. 

Shaking, the optician got to his feet again and watched the red and white coastguard ship approach, with its orange zodiac alongside. He had no idea how many people were on board Galata now, but he knew it was too many. From his vantage point he did a rapid head count. One, two, twenty... forty-six men and one woman. Plus eight crew. That meant there were fifty-five of them. Fifty-five on a boat built for a maximum of ten.”
