Introducing NYPA’s Interns
Welcome to NYPA’s 2018 Summer Intern blog series. Each week, we’ll be featuring several interns working across NYPA’s various sites and departments. Read on to learn more about our interns and why they chose to work at NYPA!
Many developmental interns have taken full-time positions at NYPA. NYPA was named one of America’s Best Midsize Employers by Forbes in 2018. To search openings, visit nypa.gov/careers.
Oleksiy Simanov is interning with the Mechanical Maintenance Department at NYPA’s 500MW site in Queens. He is from Brooklyn, NY and is pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering from the New York Institute of Technology. He said that his favorite classes have been his engineering labs because he finds building circuits fun, and he is most interested in sustainable and clean energy, especially from the sun. He enjoys working at NYPA because he appreciates how he is working to produce an extremely important product: electricity. In five years, Oleksiy hopes to be working as an Electrical Engineer in the energy industry.
Justin Davis is an Engineering Intern with the Transmission Department at NYPA’s Blenheim-Gilboa site. He is from Richmondville, NY and is currently pursuing degrees in both Civil and Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University. He said his favorite classes there are Statistics because it “provides a good foundation to many aspects in most engineering disciplines” and Geographical Information Systems because it is a “great tool that has many applications from environmental research to urban planning and building.” Justin also explained that he finds energy storage and research regarding renewable power the most interesting aspect of the energy industry, and he most enjoys working at NYPA because he appreciates how “NYPA has invested into expanding its renewable energy ties in order to provide even more clean power to the State of New York.” Justin is also a cadet in Clarkson’s Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at Clarkson, and in five years he hopes to be working as a commissioned Engineer Officer in the U.S. Army Reserves or National Guard. He also strives to hold a civilian job in the energy or utility industry, and to have completed a Master’s in Civil Engineering.
Allison Wright is an Instrumentation and Controls Intern at NYPA’s Blenheim-Gilboa site. She is from Frankfort, NY and is currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson University. She said that there, her favorite class has been Energy Conversions because she was able to learn the material with both lectures and hands-on components, and she is fascinated by how complex it is to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity, despite the fact it is so often taken for granted. Allison also explained she enjoys working at NYPA because she is able to learn something new every day, and in five years, she hopes to have a steady job and a nice home.
James Brnik is a Civil Engineering Intern at NYPA’s Niagara Site. He is from Buffalo, NY and is pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering from SUNY Buffalo. He said his favorite class so far has been Soil Mechanics because it was “very practical and easy to relate to your everyday life,” and that he finds producing clean energy the most interesting part of the energy industry. James also explained that he enjoys working at NYPA because his coworkers are “very welcoming and appreciative,” and in five years, he hopes to have a stable job either in the transportation aspect of civil engineering or at NYPA.
