P.I.X.A.L. (LEGO Ninjago)

Reason: (I have some specific thoughts here that don't line up with the fandom's typical interpretation, so if that bothers you uh. Don't read this ig. Also, spoilers ahead)

So P.I.X.A.L. is an android introduced in season 3, where she's set up as a love interest and character foil to Zane, one of the main characters and also an android. She starts out kinda blank and not entirely sentient, but she's broken out of the BBEG's control over her programming and she has to learn to, like, Be A Person and deal with emotions. She loses her body at one point, and for (way tOO LONG) multiple seasons is just an AI/brain being carried around inside Zane's head. It is not explained why she doesn't ask for a new body, nor why no-one offers her one. Eventually she builds herself a new body and starts moonlighting as a vigilante without telling anyone, and the others only find out bc her body gets high jacked and she has to warn them that a mech is coming after them. Her explanation for why she kept this a secret as presented in canon doesn't hold up and feels like the writers just wanted a reveal without having to think about character motivations.

ANYWAY. In my head lives a version of P.I.X.A.L.'s story where not only is she trans, but that fact helps her character immensely. First off, she is introduced as a guy, and has to crack her egg alongside learning to Be A Person. Zane, as a fellow android and certified Person, can help her with that. As she learns about his experiences, she learns that certain things he wants don't match up with what she wants (there is a scene I have mostly-written about Zane wanting to re-design the Titanium Ninja body to better fit his own sense of self, like making his voice not sound like it's coming out of a speaker. And P.I.X.A.L. notes that she's never liked her voice, with or without a speaker). She doesn't ask for a new body bc her options are 1) build the same old body that makes her dysphoric or 2) come out to everyone she knows, and neither option is appealing at the moment when she's still new to this whole Being A Girl thing. When she starts moonlighting as a vigilante, it's partially a way to get used to being seen as a girl (the mech would have her canon voice from the start rather than a voice changer) by others, before she tells her friends and family.

A reoccurring thought of mine about cat-like Vulcans I think you might enjoy: The Slow Blink of Affection.

Spock does it all the time without noticing. Jim thinks it's cute but doesn't bring it up because he knows being called out on displays of emotion upsets his first officer. Bones is really confused when it first happens and thinks he's like mad or smth (is even more confused when he finds out it's the damn fool's way of showing he CARES)

I'd like to hear about canon!Phoenix interacting with the Avatar setting!Phoenix. A couple of dads.

Oh that's a fun combo! I mean, on the one hand we have Avatar!Phoenix, who acquired Trucy when she was two, grew up with Miles, has fire powers, and is some enthusiastic combination between a jock and a theater kid. On the other hand, we have Phoenix, our well-beloved human disaster.

There will be at least one scene where canon!Phoenix leans with his head against the wall and wonder how his alternate self has his life so incredibly together when he himself feels like such a mess. Also, he's kinda ripped from all the martial arts? Feeling of inadequacy, thy name is Phoenix Wright. (pats him on the shoulder)

Meanwhile, Avatar!Phoenix is going, "Wait, you can read? You can write? You went to fancy people school and got an education?!? 8O 8O 8O" Because he's from a time where illiteracy is the norm and it's considered super impressive and high-tiered education for their social class that Miles can read and write. Seeing Phoenix just casually jot some notes down? Seeing him get into an argument in court? Amazing, his counterpart is so smart! He's not allowed to meet Avatar!Phoenix's boyfriend, Miles is into intelligence, how is Phoenix supposed to compete with a version of himself that's so incredibly smart and has such stylishly pointy hair??? (Avatar!Phoenix doesn't use gel or anything similar, so he's got constant bedhead, people look at him, look at canon!Phoenix, and go "Is that why gel?" "Yes, that is why gel.")

Aside from the bits of each other that make them feel inadequate about themselves, however, they get along really well. They talk about their favorite types of noodles and snicker over the fact that Steel Samurai exists in both their worlds somehow (and over the fact that both their boyfriends adore it) and their wonderful daughters who they love so much.

Putting canon!Phoenix in Avatar-setting clothes would have him going, "Hm, more sashes and ties than I'm used to, but pretty comfy!" Putting Avatar!Phoenix in a suit and dress shoes who be exactly like those pictures of dogs miserably wearing shoes. Canon!Phoenix could pass as a foreigner trying out the local fashion and not quite used to it if he went to the Avatar setting. Avatar!Phoenix looks nothing but miserable and awkward in a suit, he would like out now, please, free him.

Also, canon!Trucy would insist on spending some time with Avatar!Phoenix just for the sake of seeing what tricks he can do with his fire, and also because he can produce his own pyrotechnics and she wants to come up with some tricks he can do. Contrary to the expectations of most, canon!Phoenix 100% nopes out of this interaction - not only is he completely secure in his dad status, he doesn't want to deal with Trucy trying to rope him into being her beautiful assistant again, she's already going to try to get him to be part of her show again as a result of all this, he just knows it, but he's still going to try and avoid that situation for as long as possible. ;)

I've been reading a fanfic where, logically, it doesn't make sense for the aliens to be anything but what we see in the show, and yet somehow I can't stop imaging the Betazoid characters as your deer-people design. I'm unsure how to feel about this, but congrats on getting them stuck in my head!

Hi I have really specific feelings about your Andalit art and I'm not sure how to articulate them but I want to try So the way I draw aliens, I always feel like I need to justify their existence with designs based on real-life animals, and it's kind of exhausting for little payoff. And then I see your Andalite designs, and they're like beautifully melded cervitaurs covered in fluff, and so pretty, and I think, maybe I can have some fun creative liberties, as a treat. Hope that makes sense❤

aw jeez, oh wow, all this is so kind of you! I’m so glad you like my designs. I feel like I try new things whenever I draw Andalites (and imaginary creatures in general), mixing in a bit of this and that animal to get a cool-looking blend. I feel like grounding an imaginary animal/alien’s design in real-world biology helps them feel real and believable, but it’s also important to have fun! Making some design choices purely for aesthetics, or for what looks good in a certain picture or for a certain pose, is also totally valid.

how would jake handle his parents' grief? probably the same way he handles their grief when he actually kills tom in the last book. whether tom's fake death happens three years before the end or only a few months before, the guilt would eat him up inside and that would be fine (well-- not fine for jake lol, but fine for the narrative). maybe he regrets his decision because of his parents' grief! maybe the plan backfires and the kids have yet another unknown variable to keep track of! nothing the animorphs do has ever been easy, and i even said that the "fake car crash and send him to his grandparents" plan might not work. and thats fine.

the only difference is that tom's fake death means he can come back after the war and mr and mrs berenson don't have to cope with having a dead son for the entire rest of their lives.

is saving him realistic? nah of course not. no one is immune from being a casualty of war regardless of their relationship to the main characters. not even main character status grants immunity from death in animorphs

but i don't think saving tom would've gone against the moral of the books, though. jake having to decide between maintaining the status quo for years while knowing his brother is actively being enslaved by the enemy versus disrupting the normalcy of his home life for the off chance that he can save just one more human life IS a hard choice to make, and dealing with the consequences of attempting to save tom no matter how it turns out only reinforces the idea that war is awful and horrible and the worst kind of burden for anyone (especially a bunch of children) to have to shoulder

in the grand scheme of things, i can understand why jake would need a personal stake in the war, and i can understand giving him a family casualty (well, two family casualties). like, i get it. but after the first book, the thought of trying to rescue tom again never crosses jake's mind again and that just feels like a missed opportunity to me

for what its worth, speculating about a "save tom" scenario doesnt necessarily mean id prefer it that way. there are TONS of other things i think the animorphs should have and could have done differently throughout the course of the war, but it is what it is. its just fun to think about
