“Jude silently passes back the gas card and cuts the engine. There’s a smear of dust across one of her cheekbones, and messy wisps of hair that escaped from her ponytail are tangled around the earpieces of her glasses. The back of her neck is still stained the faint red of a week-old sunburn. She’s staring off into space again, her eyes lost somewhere in the heat mirage shimmering off the asphalt.
“Jude, you okay?” Cora asks softly. Is she here? Is that her?
Angarika shrugs elaborately, snatching a spare hairtie out of the glovebox. “She couldn’t sleep for shit last night.” Translation: God, I hope so.”
