personally I am of the opinion that vegans who are like “the way our food system currently works under capitalism on a large scale is exceptionally cruel to all animals including humans and is not sustainable, so I’m doing what I can to make the most ethical choices available to me about what I eat and encourage others to do the same” are generally very reasonable people who I agree with in spades. but vegans who seem to think human beings are not themselves animals who are ultimately also part of the food chain but instead some kind of other paternalistic higher entity that can never engage in ethical and sustainable hunting practices (and especially the fringe I’ve seen who think other carnivorous animal predators are also evil and need to be eliminated) are people I regard as foolish at best if not actively anti-indigenous and racist

so i understand the john gaius cows watch sunsets haha funny thing, i do. but i want people to think a little deeper about the relationship between indigenous people and livestock animals, especially as a māori man in ‘new zealand’.

the dairy industry has completely obliterated the natural ecosystem of aotearoa: half of the land’s lakes are polluted, two thirds of the rivers are too polluted to swim in. (if you read more from this article, you find more very harrowing statistics and facts about the pollution caused by the dairy industry.)

the war on clean and fresh water is a fight that has been oppressing indigenous people disproportionately from the beginning. indigenous people all over the world have been targeted by bioterrorism via water and that form of oppression is still happening. (x) our water is our lifeforce and part of our cultural identities. when we say we’re connected to the land, we mean the water as well. water is life.

this is no different for the māori. colonial farming & meat practices have been detrimental to indigenous communities all over the world, including the māori. yes, as a indigenous person, it gets frustrating when people at large care more about the non-native animals destroying your land than your actual people. european settlers have shown time and time again they would rather sympathize with livestock animals than brown people.
