Night Court (For the gen relationships ask)
Give me a fandom and I’ll tell you:
My favorite parent-child relationship
Buddy and Harry is one of them - the other I’ll discuss later. They really care about each other, they’re a lot alike, and it’s great to see them grow closer as the show progresses. Plus, their interactions are just great, regardless of if they’re humorous or sweet or something else.
My favorite sibling relationship
They’re not related by blood but they act like siblings, so I’m going to go with Roz and Bull. Roz is such an older sister to Bull - she picks on him from time to time, but if anyone messes with him they have to deal with her. And their conversation wherein Bull asks her to be his Best Person is one of the sweetest moments in the show.
My favorite family relationship (other)
Selma and Bull for found mother/son family dynamic. While I’m glad we got to meet Roz, I’m super sad about Selma’s death. Both because the actress died and because these two were so great together and their relationship had so much potential/places to go. Selma could be snarky, but when push came to shove it was clear that she really cared about Bull. And Bull made no effort to hide how much he loved Selma.
My favorite friendship between two people
If I’m going purely platonic, I’d say Dan and Roz. (If not, I’d do Dan and Harry, but I’ve said a lot about them already). They’re not a lot alike, but they manage to get along via snark and a distaste for sentimentality, along with how they’re slightly on the darker end of the morality scale than the others - more likely to be mean/rude/sarcastic.
(Though Mac’s got a decent cruel streak - he’s just more subtle about it).
Anyway, they’re also one of the few people they let their guards/grumpy facades down around - Dan has Harry and occasionally Christine, and Roz has Christine and Bull - and the one of those few who understands/accepts that less nice side.
My favorite friendship between a group
Probably everyone. I’ve said so many times over so many fandoms that one of my absolute favorite tropes is the found family trope and this show fulfills that.
My favorite mentorship
I’m...not really sure there is one? It’s been a while since I’ve seen the show, and I can’t remember any mentorships. I guess maybe the bit where Christine’s senatorial rival gives her some advice counts? I’m sorry, but this one’s kinda hard.
My favorite rivalry
Mel Tormè vs. the entire cast, pretty much. Honestly, one of my favorite recurring jokes is all the stuff that happens to poor Mel every time he shows up. He gets chased around the building by Bull, handcuffed to a chair by Dan, given a cold and accidentally shoved out an 18th story window by Harry, strapped to a morgue gurney and wheeled around the building by Bull, and sentenced to contempt in court by Harry (though that was mostly his own fault).
My favorite hatred/antipathy
Harry vs. Barry Manilow. I have no idea why Harry hates him/his music so much - the show never says nor implies other than that he’s “modern” - but every time his hatred for him comes up it’s hilarious. Especially the bit where Harry’s going on this whole tirade about these two book burners and how book burning is horrible, but turns around and gives them a $1 fine the second he learns the book is titled The Genius of Barry Manilow.
My favorite potential relationship between characters who never talk in canon
I think Selma and Roz would’ve loved each other, not that they ever would’ve admitted it. They’re both prickly and sarcastic, don’t take anyone’s shit, tough as nails with a hidden soft side, and love/defend Bull to Hell and back.
Second place is the fact that I’m always going to mourn the fact that we never got to meet/know much about Harry’s mom. It would’ve been great to see what she was like and her reuniting with Harry (alongside Buddy)(and with subsequent plotlines) would’ve been more interesting than just Buddy coming to tell Harry that she died. Oh well.
For the musical ask: 7, 17, 18, 19, and 23
7. A musical everyone can learn from.
Honestly, there’s a lot of musicals people can learn from, but the first one that comes to mind is Memphis. It shows the realities and horrors of racism in the US South in the 50s while still managing to be an upbeat, if bittersweet, musical.
17. A line that never fails to make you laugh.
The first one I can think of off the top of my head is from Wicked and it’s Elphaba to Glinda: “Well we can’t all come and go by bubble!” Favorite version of it is when I saw Wicked on Broadway two years ago when Christine Dwyer was Elphaba - she just had the best and funniest way of saying it.
18. An upcoming production you’re excited for.
Does this mean a new show that’s coming up or a new version of a pre-existing show or what? If the former, then the Anastasia musical. It’s been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid and although the musical seems to be quite different (no magic elements) I’m still interested in seeing it. If the latter, then the Chicago cast’s production of Hamilton. I’m going to see it with my grandparents in a couple weeks and I’m so excited!
19. Do you have any funny misheard lyrics from a showtune?
Can’t think of any I’ve misheard, but I once sang “I’ve been reading Common Sense by Thomas Paine” as “I’ve been reading Thomas Sense by Common Paine”. Hope that’s an acceptable substitute.
23. Cast recording you know by heart.
Hamilton. There’s a lot of musicals that I know most of the words for, but Hamilton’s currently the only one I know all of the words to all the songs.
☆ 🌙♦️ for both Christine & Harry
Finally finished with finals and Christmas, so I can get started on answering asks! I apologize to you and @honorreid for taking so long.
Onto the headcanons!
