So, you know ancient solstice markers? Like Stonehenge and the Sun Dagger in Chaco Canyon? I’d learned about them before, I knew that they were aligned with the sun and stars and stuff, and I understood—more or less—that they were impressive feats of astronomical science and engineering. But I didn’t really get how cool they were until I was watching old Cosmos episodes with my wife (high as balls, as Carl intended)

We were having a BLAST, I had my phone out, I was making calendar notifications for all the big events on the Cosmic Calendar—I had this idea that we could celebrate them like holidays, like Cambrian Explosion Day (December 15th), TITS DAY (December 26th—first appearance of mammals in the fossil record), The Invention of Sex (hard to pin down a day but it’s early November, you could spend a whole week on it if you want), etc etc. I made them all-day events and set them to repeat yearly, indefinitely

And all of a sudden I realized, this thing that I’m doing, right now, with my smartphone—setting a reminder for a specific day of the year, a reminder that will alert me on that precise date and no other, and will continue to do so indefinitely—is the exact same thing the ancient people of Chaco Canyon did

except they did it with ROCKS

they built a functional calendar alert OUT OF ROCKS and it continues to announce “Hey it’s that day you care about” ON THE PRECISE DAY THAT IT’S SUPPOSED TO, even THOUSANDS OF YEARS LATER
