My favourite compliment ever was this old lady on the bus one day with a bag full of vegetables and she got up while the bus was moving and hobbled over to me and started pointing at my face and saying something unintelligable (I don’t think she could speak english very well) and I thought she was saying there’s something on my face so I was shifting uncomfortably and trying to find whatever it was and then she grabbed me by the shoulders and looked up at me and gestured my face again with her hand and said “beautiful”. I don’t think I’ve ever blushed so much or felt so flattered by a compliment before, by this old woman who obviously had trouble getting around and had her hands full and had to break through a language barrier yet still went out of her way to compliment me. It was so sweet and I wish I wasn’t so awkward and our meeting wasn’t so brief so I could have helped her with her things or asked her name or said something more than just “you too” -which I meant. She waved it off with her hand but then her and her husband sat on either side of me for the rest of the trip (only a moment before my stop). It was brief and unexpected but it really spoke to me about how kindness truly is the most beautiful thing you can possess and how much small gestures can mean to people even if it doesn’t seem like much to you. Go out of your way to be kind, whenever you can and whenever you feel the words in your mind. That woman is forever in my heart because of a single word and I aspire to be as sweet as her in every aspect of my life.
