Professional Hair for Millionaires
Today at my place of employment my coworkers and I were given the command to lay our hair down and to pull our hair back.
“Its distracting” they said.
As a black woman rocking the natural hair that grows out of my head, this came as a shock. The place Iwork for feels my hair is unkempt, wild, distracting, and too unprofessional for the customers. Now I work for a bank... a big bank but I must say not once have I met a millionaire.
Forget the millionaire part though... My workplace wants me to conform to society's straight hair standards. Come on people its 2018 and we... I am tired of damaging styles that causes traction alopecia, head sores, headaches, sleepless nights, and financial hardships let my hair breathe and scalp heal from the years of mis-education and abuse.
If you let your employees express their true selves it will foster goodwill. Not asking employees to conform to a dress or appearance code, as well as trusting and giving them the responsibility and freedom to be innovative and creative, are linked to advancement.
