How Far in Advance Should I Get a Spray Tan?

How far in advance before my event should I get a spray tan?  This is a very common question we get from our new clients and social media followers.  The timing of your sunless tan or spray tan is very important to looking your best and making sure your spray tan is at the peak of the development stages. The majority of the time we would advice our clients to book a spray tan 2-3 days before a big event or wedding.  Our experience tells us that this is the time frame where the sunless tan has fully developed into a beautiful, golden brown.  This would give you enough time for your first rinse and research also shows that the tan is still developing after your first rinse so 2-3 days is the perfect amount of time.   A typical spray tan can last anywhere from 7-9 days, sometimes longer.  We have discussed this in previous posts that is depends on how you care for your tan but a good rule of thumb is that your tan will last between 7-9 days.  It's very important to note that after each shower and as the days go on the tan will fade.  You don't want to schedule your spray tan too far in advance for the fact that after four days the tan will certainly be less vibrant than the previous three days after you get a spray tan. White Spots After a Spray Tan? No Problem We Have a Fix for That!

The preparation that goes into preparing for a spray tan can be just as important as the technician spraying you and the solution used.   Skin that isn't properly washed or exfoliated prior to a tanning appointment can lead to unwanted spots, spots that become more noticeable as the skin darkens over the following 24 to 48 hours. Instead of scrubbing your skin relentlessly or asking to get sprayed over, fix the white spots at home to even out your skin's color. Step 1: If you have noticed white spots on your skin 24-48 hours after your spray tan these are simply spots where the tan did not adhere to your skin.  Your first step will be to take a shower and gently rinse, then pat dry using a towel. Step 2: Rub an exfoliating cleanser into the white spot. Pay attention when applying the cleanser to only rub it into the white spot and not the surrounding tan skin. Exfoliating helps to remove the dead skin cells, dirt and oils that originally caused the white spots. Step 3: Wipe away the exfoliant with a damp washcloth. Dry your skin with a separate washcloth.  Again, be sure to wipe away only the white spot and not the skin surrounding. Step 4: Cover the white spots with a store bought self tanning product (gloves optional).  Use broad, even strokes to apply the product. If the spot is very small, use a Q-tip to apply the self-tanner.   Step 5: Allow the self-tanner to dry for at least 20 minutes. During this time, don't allow the white spots to come into contact with anything so avoid putting clothing on over the spots. Steer clear of water for at least three hours after applying the self-tanner and wait until the following day before taking a shower.  If you follow the above steps you should be able to correct any areas where the spray tan did not adhere to your skin.  So if this happens to you, don't freak out or try to rub the white spots or decide to get another spray tan.  There is a reason why the spray tan solution did not stick to your skin in the first place but with this information you will be able to cover up white spots like a seasoned spray tanner!

Get the Most out of your Sunless Tanning Experience

Certain occasions require you to look your best.   If you are getting married, going to a formal or another important function the expectation of your spray tan to turn out great will also be very high. Here are few steps you should take to make sure that a bad spray tan will not spoil your event: 1. If you've never had a spray tan before, make sure that you have a trial few weeks before the occasion. You do not know how your skin will take the solution, especially if you have fair skin. Although chances of going orange are very remote, how would you feel if it happened on the day of your wedding or prom? 2. If you have never had a spray tan before don't opt for the darkest solution. We would recommend an 8.5%  shade if possible. You want to simply add a "glow" to enhance your features and your attire. 3. Depending on the time of the occasion, you want to get your spray tan a day or two in advance.  There is a good chance of sweating off your tan if you tan that day and it could potentially damage your outfit.  Imagine wearing a light colored outfit and sweating off your tan through your outfit.  It wouldn't be a good look.  Allow yourself enough time in advance for the tan to set in and for you to shower washing off the color guard.  Getting sprayed a day or two in advance is always recommended. 4. Take extra care in your preparation before the tan. Exfoliate very well with the proper products, and apply barrier cream all over your hands, feet and knee caps before spray tanning. 5. A tan extender can be a good idea to repair and prolong your tan way ahead of the occasion. Learn how to apply before so you don't have to worry about the details the day of your event. 6. If you are using a new technician it would be good to give it a trial run enough time in advance.  If you go to a salon there is always a chance you get a different technician each time.  This is different with a mobile service when a specific technician can be requested.  If you like a particular technician, there is no sense trying a new one a couple days before your event.  If  it ain't broke don't fix it. A spray tan for wedding, prom or any other special occasion is a wonderful idea.  It will make your hair shine, eyes sparkle and give you a brilliant smile.  When you have a "glow" to your skin you will surely be the center of attention.
