“Do I look different?”
"Nope.”
“You didn’t even look at me.”
“I don’t need to,” you replied, eyes trained on the drama playing from your laptop. “You always look beautiful.”
Your wife’s soft laughter flooded the apartment, and a smile fell on your lips. The couch dipped slightly as she plopped herself down next to you. She snuggled up close to you, resting her head in the crook of your neck.
Sunmi stayed still for several minutes before she shuffled closer to you. Arms wrapped around your torso and her head fell into your lap.
“Hi there,” you chuckled.
You leaned down and softly pecked her lips. When you pulled away, she surged upwards to kiss you once more. Every time you tried to separate the two of you, she found a way to capture your lips.
“Babe,” you whined lightly. “Please stop, I can’t watch my show.”
“Sorry.”
Her head fell back into your lap, a small frown on her face. A soft sigh escaped your lips, and you paused the video. You pulled her up into your lap. Instinctively, she wrapped her legs around your waist, and her arms around your neck.
“Jagi, you know I didn’t mean to upset you,” you calmly explained, reaching up to run your fingers through her hair. “It’s my day off, and I was really hoping to finish this episode today.”
“I know,” Sunmi sighed, leaning into your touch. “I’m just a little sensitive today.”
“Anything I can do to help?”
“Pizza?”
You nodded, and she let out a squeal. Sunmi placed a chaste kiss to your cheek before jumping off of your lap. She all but sprinted into your shared bedroom, eager to find her cell phone.
Twenty minutes later, you were placing the takeout order onto your kitchen counter. When you opened the box, you were surprised by its contents.
“Is this the right order?”
Sunmi nodded, grabbing a slice.
“You don’t like olives,” you deadpanned. Jokingly, you pressed a hand onto your wife’s forehead. “Are you ill?”
She shrugged in response, her lips curved up. “I just had a craving for it.” You didn’t question it, merely biting into your slice.
You did, however, want to question how she managed to eat five slices in one sitting. You knew that she was trying to gain weight. But the sight before you filled your body with worry.
Rather than say anything, you bit your lip and swallowed your concerns.
Later. You could ask her later.
Unfortunately, you failed to consider that you were practically a goldfish. Your memory sucked. Despite being able to recall the exact outfit that Sunmi wore during your first date, you couldn’t remember the simple things; this included.
Your concerns completely slipped your mind, until you were driving back home from Sunmi’s late band practice. It was a red light, and the thought randomly popped into your head.
“You’ve been eating a lot.”
“What?” Startled, she turned to you with wide eyes. “Did you just call me fat?”
Okay, not your best moment.
“No, no, no.” You quickly corrected it. “I just mean that I’ve noticed that you’ve been eating more. I know you’re trying to gain weight, and I’m proud of you for being so adamant about achieving your goal. I just don’t want you to sacrifice your health to satisfy the public.”
The light changed. Slowly, you continued driving down the dark road. You gulped, as silence fell. When you took a peek over at her, Sunmi was gnawing on her lip.
“Babe?”
She didn’t respond. Rather, she reached over to the stereo and began to fiddle with the stations. When she finally settled on one that she liked, she cranked up the volume.
The remainder of the car ride felt like an eternity. After you pulled into your assigned parking spot, you sprung out of your seat. You rushed over to open the passenger side door, nearly stumbling over your feet.
When you opened the door, Sunmi was still sitting, arms crossed over her chest. She barely glanced in your direction. As you two walked into the apartment building, she grabbed your hand without saying anything.
In the elevator, you stared at your reflections. Her hand was tightly clasped in yours, but you could feel the anger radiating off of her. Her eyes kept running up and down her body.
“I-”
The doors opened, and your wife pulled you out of the elevator. You were yanked inside the apartment. She released your hand in the entrance and gestured to the white box on the counter.
“Open it.”
Her voice was low, eyes still not meeting yours. You did as she instructed. The purple ribbon fell off with ease, and your heart nearly stopped as its contents were revealed.
“Are you serious?” You whispered, tears brimming in your eyes.
Sunmi finally broke into a grin. “Surprise!” With that, she excitedly bounced over to you, engulfing you in a tight hug.
“We’re having a baby!” You shouted, spinning Sunmi in circles.
Laughter erupted in your apartment, Sunmi’s squeals harmonizing with your giggles.
“You better believe it,” she retorted, pecking your cheek as you put her down. “What I can’t believe is that you called me fat.”
“Babe, I love you, but last night you ate all of the fried chicken. I think I had like two pieces.”
“Still, I’m hurt.” She pouted, giving you her best puppy eyes.
You chuckled, wrapping your arms around her waist, pulling her close. “I’m sorry, love.” Leaning forward, you pressed your lips against hers. You gently threaded your fingers through her hair, and her lips parted slightly.
Slowly, you pulled away. She let out a soft whine, her lips chasing yours.
“Am I forgiven?”
“Only if you kiss me again.”
Later that night, when the two of you were a tangled mess of limbs, Sunmi's fingers fiddled with the wedding ring on your finger. You gave her a sleepy smile. "I can't imagine being here with anyone else." Her soft words echoed in the quiet room. "I really love you."
"I love you," you whispered back. You placed a hand on her stomach. "I love you too little one."
