Monthly Klance prompt: Sunset
A small drabble for today’s ‘sunset’ prompt:
Sunsets on Dkr’teri aren’t as romantic as Lance had imagined. They actually aren't sunsets. It’s light, and then suddenly it’s not, and they are plunged into darkness so thick it seems to be alive in itself. Below them, remote in their gaze, tiny lights of the neon cities blink awake in shades of gold, pink and blue; artificial fireflies, a glow rather than true shine. Lance sucks in a breath at the abrupt change in setting.
“Errr...well that didn’t go as planned.”
There’s a snort next to him, so close that Lance can feel Keith shaking and although his plan has fallen flat, a classic romance moment hidden in shadow, he still has the shiver and thrill of Keith’s laughter.
“Nice one, Loverboy.”
Lance wants to rise at that, to challenge and jump into the teasing tone, all snark without heat, all chase but no bite. But just the syllables in Keith’s voice have him wavering, the cadence of the letters strung together so delightful he could almost melt into them.
So instead he leans over, manages to smack his head atop of Keith’s as he does, but through grumbling and shuffling, negotiating the space without truly moving away, he eventually rests his head on Keith’s shoulder.
Keith’s arm jerks, moves, and Lance almost hides his hand just to feel more laughter as he knows that’s the destination. But today he can’t bring himself to do it, so brushes their fingers together, connection on five points, all static and bubble where they touch.
Silence in the half-light, and Lance is content, in that everything is not a fairytale scene because perfection does not exist in people or sunsets or relationships. Instead it’s in stolen secret moments, in memories they will laugh at together in the days to come.
And it’s there in kisses in the dark, the best kind. As Keith moves, shifts in that way which now, with little he can see to distract him, can tell is the movement for a kiss. Lance smiles, extends and goes in for the steal.
A sunset in the darkness: their own romantic canvas.
