“All In Your Head”

It wasn’t uncommon for a girl of Katie’s age to have an imaginary friend, so when she mentioned an invisible girl that she liked to talk to, her mother, Joanne, only smiled. “So tell me about her,” Joanne asked Katie over breakfast.
“Her name’s Sarah. She wears a braid around her neck,” Katie replied.
“Is that all?” Knowing Katie, there would be much more.
“She wears a lot of purple makeup. I think she wants to be a princess.”
Joanne laughed.
“Don’t tell her I said this, but it doesn’t look very nice on her. She also likes to swing around on her braid.”
Joanne patted Katie’s head. “I hope I get to meet her someday,” she told her daughter. “She sounds like quite a character.”
“Oh, you will. She says that someday she’s gonna get to you.”
Something about Katie’s last statement was slightly unsettling, but Joanne shrugged it off. Katie had a very active imagination.
Over the next few weeks, Joanne heard a lot more about Sarah. “She likes to wear old fashioned clothes.”
“She tells me every day that she can’t wait until she breaks free, but I don’t know what she means.”
“She gets mad sometimes for no reason.”
Katie’s stories were becoming increasingly creepy.
One day, Joanne sat Katie down to talk with her. “You’re getting old. You should start trying to forget about this imaginary friend of yours.”
“She’s not imaginary. I can see her with my own eyes,” Katie replied. “Just try to forget her,” Joanne insisted. “It’s all in your head.”
“You shouldn’t say that. She doesn’t like you very much. You’re gonna make her angry.” Joanne shivered. “Remember what I said, Katie. It’s all in your head.”
“Okay,” Katie responded reluctantly.
That night, Joanne awoke from her sleep, thirsty. She crawled out of bed to go get a drink. When she emerged from her room and into the hall, she saw something at the end of the hall that made her freeze in terror.
A young girl in an old dress hung from the ceiling, a noose around her neck. Her entire face was a sickly shade of purple. She swung slowly, back and forth. Realization dawned on Joanne. It was easy to see now how a child’s mind saw the rope as a braid, and the deathly hue as makeup. Joanne jumped as the girl opened her eyes. She let out a low moan that turned Joanne’s bones to rubber and reached out her arms. Joanne could now see that the rope was fraying, seconds away from breaking.
She ran into Katie’s room. “Katie! Wake up! You need to tell me how to stop Sarah!”
Katie rose with a yawn. “Huh? What, mom?”
“Sarah is coming after me! Do you know what she wants?”
“Don’t you remember mom? She isn’t real. It’s all in your head.” Katie went back to sleep. From the hall, there came a snap, a thump, and a moan.
