summary: when your body cannot yet understand that danger has passed, gaara takes you somewhere quiet and gives it gentler evidence in the form of warm air, steady hands, and shinki's deeply unfortunate-looking cactus
word count: 2,210
content: gaara x gn!reader, established relationship, emotional hurt/comfort, very soft fluff, anxiety and distress, descriptions of trembling and panic, grounding, cuddling, gaara being playful
a/n: this is an extremely self-indulgent comfort piece written for very specific circumstances, so i apologise if some of the details make slightly less sense without context, i've tried to edit it to be as accessible as possible. also featuring toothpick the cactus, shinki’s strange yet beloved son from my oc x gaara project🖤
Gaara did not ask why your hands were still shaking.
He noticed, naturally. He had noticed before you had even entered the greenhouse, when your fingers slipped against the handle and the door opened with an awkward scrape instead of its usual quiet click. His eyes moved briefly from your face to the hand you immediately tucked against your stomach, but he kindly said nothing about it. He only shifted the tray of seedlings he had been examining and made room for you beside him at the potting bench.
The greenhouse was warmer than the corridor outside, the air pleasantly heavy with the smell of damp soil and sun-warmed clay. Evening light filtered through the glass in muted shades of amber and green, falling across rows of cacti in long, orderly shadows. Nothing in here knew about hearings or evidence or decisions arriving in envelopes; nothing required you to remember what had been said, or decipher an expression you had been too frightened to read at the time.
Gaara held out a small, soft-bristled brush.
You stared at it for a few quiet moments. “What’s this?”
“Dust.”
“I know what dust is, Gaara.”
“That’s a relief.”
The answer was delivered with such perfect seriousness that you looked up sharply, finding the faintest betrayal of amusement at the corners of his mouth. He placed the brush in your hand and turned one of the smaller pots towards you, revealing a squat cactus covered in dense white spines.
“Dust settles between them,” he explained. “It blocks some of the light and can conceal pests. Brush outwards, following the direction of the spines.”
You glanced between him and the cactus. “Is this a thinly veiled attempt to give my hands something to do?”
“It wasn’t especially well disguised.”
There was no pity in his voice, no false brightness, either; he did not treat you as though you might shatter if he acknowledged that something was wrong. He simply picked up another brush and began working on the cactus beside yours, demonstrating the careful movement without watching to see whether you obeyed. That helped more than it should have.
You bent over the pot and tried to follow his example. The brush trembled whenever you lifted it, but the cactus did not care, it demanded only that you move slowly enough to avoid its spines. Outwards, Gaara had said, so you concentrated on that—on the whisper of bristles against the plant, the pale line of dust collecting on the bench, the warmth pressing through the greenhouse glass.
“Those little patches the spines grow from are called areoles,” Gaara continued. His voice had settled into the same calm cadence he used when reading reports aloud beside you, low and even enough that you could listen without feeling forced to answer. “They are unique to cacti. Spines, flowers and new branches all grow from them.”
“They look fluffy.”
“Some are.”
“Can I touch one?”
“No.”
Your hand stopped midway towards the plant.
Gaara eyes flicked towards it, then back to you. “You may touch that one.”
“But you just said no.”
“I was answering whether you can touch one safely.”
“Rude,” you muttered.
“Accurate.”
A thread of sand slipped around the pot and rotated it until a harmless-looking patch of white fibres faced you. You touched it with one cautious fingertip. It was softer than you expected, almost like felt, and the small surprise of it loosened something in your chest.
Gaara continued down the bench. You followed with your brush still in hand, letting him show you the fine webbing that indicated mites and the slight wrinkling that meant a cactus was drawing upon its stored water. He explained that the ribs running along some species allowed them to expand after rainfall, making room for water without splitting their skin, while others had roots that spread close to the surface, wider than the plant above them, prepared to gather as much as possible from rain that might last only a few minutes.
“They don’t look as though there’s much happening,” you murmured.
“There usually is.”
Your gaze caught on his face. Gaara did not look back, but you knew him well enough to recognise when a sentence had been positioned carefully between you.
At the far end of the greenhouse stood a cactus so extraordinarily tall and thin that it appeared to have been stretched. It rose from a blue-glazed pot in one improbable green column, leaning slightly towards the nearest window despite the wooden support Shinki had tied beside it. A small sign had been pressed into the soil in Shinki’s unmistakably severe handwriting.
TOOTHPICK. DO NOT ROTATE.
You stopped beside the cactus. “Why can’t we rotate Toothpick?”
“Shinki is monitoring the direction of his growth.”
“He’s growing towards the light.”
“I know.”
“Does Shinki know?”
“I explained phototropism to him.”
“And?”
Gaara inspected one of Toothpick’s spines with great attention. “He believes Toothpick is choosing a direction.”
A laugh escaped you before you could stop it. It sounded strange after the last few days, rusty and startled, but Gaara’s expression softened as though he had been waiting patiently for precisely that sound.
“He is a cactus,” you said.
“That observation was not well received.”
“Toothpick looks like someone pulled him through a straw.”
“He has dignity.”
“You think he’s ugly too.”
“I said he has dignity.”
“That’s not a denial.”
Gaara adjusted the wooden support by a fraction. “Not every living thing must be aesthetically pleasing to deserve care.”
“Oh my gosh, you do think Shinki’s cactus is ugly!”
“I think,” he replied, with the grave composure of a Kazekage delivering an official judgement, “that Toothpick has shown remarkable perseverance.”
You laughed again, harder this time, and had to put the brush down before you dropped it. Gaara’s eyes followed the movement of your hands. The amusement in them faded, not entirely, but enough for you to know he had seen the tremor worsen.
For a moment, you hated your body for betraying you. You had already survived the hearing earlier in the week. You had left the room, returned home and slept badly, but enough that the day itself should have begun receding into memory. Instead, your muscles still ached from how tightly they had been held, your heart kept lurching at nothing, and even here, surrounded by warm glass and ridiculous cacti, some part of you remained convinced that the threat was standing just beyond the door.
“I think they said no,” you whispered.
Gaara did not offer you a reassurance neither of you could prove. He lowered himself onto the broad wooden ledge beneath the window and waited. When you moved towards him, he opened his knees just enough for you to stand between them, his hands resting lightly at your hips without pulling you any closer than you chose to come.
“You don’t know that yet,” he said.
“I felt it.”
“You were afraid.”
“I couldn’t read any of them. I’ve tried to remember their faces, but I can’t—I—I don’t know what they thought. I don’t know if they believed me.”
Gaara’s thumbs moved once against your sides, a slow pass over the fabric. “You were in a room with strangers who held power over your life. Your body understood that as danger so it was watching for an attack, not studying their expressions.”
“It—it felt like they were a threat.”
“I know.”
The simplicity of it undid you more thoroughly than any denial could have. Gaara knew intimately what it meant for another person’s gaze to feel like a weapon. He knew what it was to enter a room already braced for judgement, to search every silence for an approaching blow. He would never tell you that there had been nothing to fear simply because the danger had not been physical.
You folded forward until your forehead rested against his shoulder. His arms came around you without hesitation then, one firm across your back while the other hand cradled the base of your skull. He did not hush you when your breathing caught. He merely held you securely enough that you no longer had to spend strength holding yourself together.
“The uncertainty remains,” he said beside your ear, “but that room does not.”
“My body thinks it does,” you whispered into him.
“Yes.”
“How do I make it stop?”
“You don’t make it do anything.” His fingers moved slowly through your hair. “It protected you as well as it knew how, and now it must learn that the danger has changed.”
“Changed isn’t the same as gone.”
“No,” Gaara agreed. “But there is no question you must answer tonight. No expression you need to interpret or any evidence left for you to produce. You have already done the part that required you.”
You closed your eyes. Beyond his shoulder, Toothpick stood silhouetted against the amber glass, absurdly elongated and listing towards the sun.
“I keep thinking that if I go over it enough, I’ll work out what they decided.”
“Has it worked?”
“No.”
“Then your fear is making you stand guard over a decision you cannot see.”
The words were gentle, but they found the exhaustion beneath the panic, that endless, desperate vigilance, as though suffering hard enough might somehow let you intercept bad news before it could reach you.
Gaara shifted one hand from your hair and held it between you, palm open. When you placed your trembling hand in his, he studied it with the same quiet attention he had given every cactus in the greenhouse.
“My body used to remain prepared for an attack even when I was alone,” he said. “Knowing that no one was present did not stop it. Hatred had kept me alive for so long that it could not understand why I no longer wanted it.”
“What did you do?”
“I gave it evidence.” His fingers folded through yours. “Again and again,” he continued. “People sat beside me without harming me. I slept and woke safely. I entered rooms and was welcomed. None of it changed me immediately, but the body learns through repetition.”
“And what evidence am I giving mine?”
Gaara looked around the greenhouse. “The door is closed, the air is warm, you are holding my hand…and Toothpick remains unfortunate-looking.”
A wet laugh caught in your throat. “He can hear you,” you warned.
“He has heard worse.”
“From you?”
“From Kankurō.”
“That bastard.”
“I defended Toothpick’s dignity.”
“Of course you did, lover.”
The endearment drew that small, private smile from him, the one that still carried traces of disbelief whenever you spoke to him as though loving him were the easiest thing in the world. Gaara lifted your joined hands and pressed his mouth to your knuckles; he kissed each one slowly, even when they shook against his lips.
“You are here,” he hummed. “The meeting has ended and whatever decision comes, it is not in this greenhouse tonight.”
You breathed in the scent of damp soil, warm stone, the faint mineral smell of sand, then you breathed out against his neck.
“Do you want quiet,” Gaara asked, “or should I continue teaching you?”
“Keep teaching me.”
“About cacti?”
“About Toothpick specifically.”
“There is very little to teach.”
“You said he’s remarkably perseverant.”
“I was being diplomatic.”
Your laugh warmed the hollow beneath his jaw. Gaara leaned back against the glass and brought you with him, arranging you carefully between his legs until your back rested against his chest. His arms settled around your middle, not restraining but containing you, a boundary your body did not have to maintain by itself.
He told you that Toothpick had survived three repottings, an incident involving the greenhouse jackdaw and a stolen length of garden twine, and one night during which Shinki had apparently become convinced the greenhouse temperature was two degrees too low. He told you that the cactus was watered on the strictest schedule of any plant in Sunagakure and had been measured six times in the last month, although it had not grown enough to justify this. Shinki had recorded the results regardless.
Your breathing slowed while he spoke, and while the trembling did not disappear, it softened from a violent shiver into something smaller, something your bones could carry without hurting. Gaara seemed to feel each change where your body rested against his, though he did not point them out and turn comfort into another test you might fail.
“When the answer comes,” he murmured eventually, “we will meet it then.”
“What if it’s bad?”
“Then you will not meet it alone.”
“And until then?”
His hold tightened by a fraction. A ribbon of sand travelled across the greenhouse and turned the latch on the door, sealing the night outside.
“Until then,” Gaara said, resting his cheek against your hair, “we stay here until your body notices that you left the room.”
Toothpick leaned solemnly towards the dying light. You suspected he was judging you, but when you told Gaara as much, he considered the cactus for several seconds before answering.
“He takes after Shinki.”
From somewhere beyond the greenhouse came an offended, “I heard that.”
Gaara closed his eyes, lowering his mouth to your hair. You laughed into his chest, and he held you while you did.

general headcanons:
gaara tends to participate in hobbies that are associated with older people.
gaara’s role as a jinchuriki meant that during his childhood, he was rarely ever perceived for what he fundamentally was: a child. there was no time to build sandcastles or play games with temari and kankuro. he had to grow up quickly. which explains why he's gardening, doing needlework, and birdwatching when he hasn't even reached 20. he'd fuck up some bingo too if you gave him the chance idc
sunagakure appears to draw its inspiration from north african, south asian, and west asian culture. if he could be assigned a real-world ethnicity, i can definitely see him being from that region. i’m personally torn between him being levantine (syrian, lebanese, palestinian, jordanian) or egyptian.
gaara has his ears pierced: he has standard lobes, and second lobes. suna has alternative medical practices of their own that are similar to ayurveda. they believe that piercing his ears maintains the flow of his chakra, and prevents any obstructions from shukaku.
as he grows older, gaara starts to take a greater interest in personal hygiene and self-care beyond the standard water, soap, and lotion. temari gets him into skincare. he’d also find a personal fragrance, and stay with it for the rest of his life.
with that being said, i can see him smelling like oud, amber, or tonka beans—all three of which are quite popular scents in sunagakure. gaara also enjoys burning bakhoor on special occasions, like upon the arrival of a guest, for instance.
i love pale gaara as much as the next person, but he literally lives in a desert. he’s totally capable of tanning. it's only thanks to the sand shield that he has managed to stay so fair in complexion for so long.
gaara would totally have sun-bleached hair! there's so many varying colours in his strands, ranging from rich and deep copper to bright red. kankuro has definitely laughed at how gaara becomes borderline ginger when the sun stays out for longer.
he knows every fairuz (and by extension, every ziad rahbani) song like the back of his hand. he starts off every morning with her music.
saaltak habibi, saalouny el nas, adesh kan fi nas, and dhia anou are personal favourites of his.
his body temperature runs more on the cold side. he is always cold to the touch. nobody knows why.
gaara enjoys theatre and performance arts in general. the idea of becoming a different person while remaining the same fascinates him. he also enjoys puppetry.
does not like horror films and ironically, can't stand films with gore in them. he likes slice-of-life films, preferably ones with a happy ending.
he has a reddit account just to ask ridiculously specific questions.
has become somewhat of a local celebrity on r/NoStupidQuestions
sometimes he sucks ass at social media it's not even funny. temari, kankuro, and shikamaru have all had to help him extensively with online etiquette.
gaara prizes his loved ones above all else. he saves letters from them all. usually, he exchanges letters with naruto, lee, his siblings, and of course, little shikadai.
sometimes him and fuu gossip. gaara doesn't realise its gossiping, but he indulges in it though... he's lowkey messy
sasuke has a snark page on reddit and he is the most active member on it.
he used to wear red because it would hide bloodstains easier, but somewhere down the road, it just became his favourite colour. crimson red, specifically.
he doesn't play about the texture of his clothes. he fucking hates polyester and he’d rather die before he puts that shit on!
tea culture is prevalent in sunagakure and gaara is not a stranger to it. he enjoys mint tea with no sugar. gaara also enjoys noon chai because it's not sweet.
you will never see a teabag in his house either. it’s all loose leaf! yes, we are boiling it in the pot over the stove. what kettle?
he likes the beach... for obvious reasons.
poor gaara doesn't exactly have the best immune system. prolonged sleeplessness really fucked him over.
he isn't a big animal person, nor is he one to keep a pet. the only way he’d keep a pet is if it were a more self-sufficient animal that doesn't need much taking care of. he’d probably like an outdoor cat.
romantic headcanons:
gaara has the potential to be attracted to anybody. his sexuality isn't defined by sex itself. he's attracted to kindness, strength, and people who are accepting.
gaara is not exactly fond of diffidence in a partner. he doesn't appreciate people who are afraid to speak their mind around him. people who withdraw their tongues, people who tip-toe around him and act like they're walking on eggshells... he favours high self esteem and sureness in a partner. just keep it real with him icl
a person who has confidence is a person who can unlock the doors that leads to gaara’s heart. please, make it egregiously evident that you don't fear him in the slightest. he has already had more than his maximum dose of the world receiving him with hesitance. being indiscriminate with your treatment of others, including himself, is likely to get his respect. act like you know who you are.
gentleness is key, but don't make it excessive. if you treat gaara like he's about to break, he's not going to appreciate that. approach him with firmness and recognise that his story is one of strength. the things gaara has endured does not make a weak person in the slightest.
romance with gaara is a slow-moving one where patience is a pre-requisite. he needs time to bloom, and it's very likely that a close friendship will need to be established before anything romantic can happen.
gaara has never had a romantic crush before. he's coming to the realisation that he doesn't feel this way about any of his other close friends either. it's just you.
he'd notice the signs of him having a crush the same way someone else would notice symptoms of a fever, a cold, or some other medical condition.
he'd notice that his heart beats a bit faster around you. that his mouth gets a little bit drier, that his palms feel clammier than usual. he feels more whole when you are around, and conversely, he feels like there is a void in his heart when you aren't around.
he'd definitely speak to temari or kankuro about it, because he is unable to define these feelings as a crush. he trusts them to accurately put a label on this newfound feeling, and promptly give him guidance.
now, romantic attraction is a fresh emotion for gaara. if you're attracted to him, you have to be very clear about your attraction to him. usually, you're the one who has to make the first moves, especially in the early stages of your relationship.
something tells me that he'd find your insistence charming: you're inviting him to go to places with you; you're asking him out to dinner, and overall, just showing a genuine interest in him as a person even if he's being passive. you're seriously going out of your way to spend time with him. he finds it very endearing.
it's easy to fluster gaara. no, he isn't steaming and getting red in the face. he's clearing his throat and shrinking himself, very very subtly. it's because he doesn't know how to handle the kind of attention you're showering him in. when it comes from you, being called fine, or handsome, or beautiful makes him feel shy. he still can't believe that someone is seeing him so fondly.
at first, gaara kisses with his eyes open. in his youth, gaara was told that acts of intimacy were not designed for pleasure, but instead, were designed with the sole purpose of distracting him; of making him more vulnerable and easy to harm. he keeps his eyes open as a means of remaining vigilant. once he realises that your intimacy is a safe space, he closes his eyes.
(his mouth tastes like mint because that's his favourite tea)
similarly, he finds it easier to sleep around you. his body registers you as a sanctuary where he doesn't have to defend himself, because he's finally come to understand that your affection does not come with a devastating price. you're not waiting to catch him with his guard down or anything, you really just love him to the point where you'll let him shut down without a cost.
he doesn't really use pet names, because your name itself is the celebration of your existence. it is beautiful to him on its own, so he will just say your name. maybe "beloved," sometimes.
gaara would say “i love you” sparingly. that's not to say gaara doesn't love you. he does. it's to say that there are other expressions of love that transcends words.
he doesn't care about words when he can just hold you after a long days worth of work. when he can taste the sweetness of your lips. when he can plant your favourite flower in his greenhouse and give it to you. gaara takes action.
his actions are as quiet as they are loud. he is a listener. he's always making mental notes on you, even on the things you mention in passing that you think are small and irrelevant. he commits every fact about you to his memory.
you condition him to enjoy physical touch as time passes. gaara's skin has been touched before, and before that, almost never. he's felt bruising kicks and punches, but never once has he felt the tenderness of your hands massaging into his scalp. he knew softness could be an option, but he didn't think he could receive it. he wants more of you. eventually, he starts to seek touch on his own.
holding hands, interlocking fingers, hugging, arms wrapped around your waist, cuddling, wanting you to sit in his lap... he is climbing up the ladder!
kiss the scar on his face. please. show him that he does not have to rely on himself for love anymore. you are also here.
seeing you laughing and having a good time with his siblings is the ultimate green flag for him. he can literally see a lifetime with you in that moment.
when gaara is with you, he's going to be with you for life. if the relationship ends in any way, be it death, cheating (GOD FORBID), or just a general break up, gaara will be devastated, and i doubt he'll find love again. he is terrible at "casual." love is an immense act of transparency that he takes seriously! you are his first, you are his last.
sexual headcanons (NSFW beyond this point):
we have established this very well, but gaara is a virgin. he doesn't even bat an eye over the thought of losing his virginity to you, though. he understands that you will cross that bridge when you get there and that there's no rush.
gaara would not wait until marriage to have sex. he doesn't subscribe to the notion that virginity equates to purity.
sexual compatibility is not a proper concern for him. he could go through a lifetime of celibacy if he wanted. your emotional bond and the romantic relationship that's built on it are wayyyy more important to him than sex.
he is not opposed to sex, though. gaara will always make sure that you're pleased.
you are both going to have extensive and uncomfortable conversations about where your boundaries start and end. gaara does not like surprises. he wants you to lay out all your cards on the table for him to memorise. he doesn't want to entertain the risk of hurting you, or making you uncomfortable whatsoever.
your first time with gaara probably isn't going to be spontaneous. there's a lot of talk you're having in regards to sex at this time, and in one of those talks, you are definitely planning when you're gonna put it on him. you're both busy people. the time needs to be right. you need to ensure nobody will disturb you, and that you're both comfortable
it can be difficult to tell when gaara's turned on. he's fairly good at suppressing his emotions in general, but particularly his desire.
there's a few signs that jump out at you, though. sometimes, he can't keep eye contact with you for long. when he sits, he crosses and uncrosses his legs more than usual. there seems to be longer silences that go beyond him taking a moment to think...
when gaara was younger, he was instructed by his handlers to be wary against sex and all forms of carnal desire. he was informed that lust was a destructive state that could render him a useless human weapon in suna's arsenal.
which is why it's so hard to tell when he's turned on. he doesn't want to prove them right, but to an extent, they are. he's helpless against his desire, against you. he doesn't like lacking control over himself, but you make his self-control slip anyways. the influence you have over him scares him a little.
as a result, he loves it when you let him know that it's okay to indulge in you. the doors are locked, the blinds are drawn, the lights are off, and it's just you two bathing in candlelight. everything goes, everything is allowed. "touch me here," "touch me there," oh, he loves it.
in general, gaara loves it when you take the lead in the bedroom. it's a respite from his position of authority as kazekage. for once, he's the one receiving orders and instructions instead of being the one giving them. you guide him with such clarity, that he can't help but feel compelled to obey. he can turn his mind off. he doesn't have to think on the behalf of thousands right now. he can just think for you, and that's perfect.
FOREPLAY!
gaara is overly into foreplay. he lives for your hands rubbing over his body. he loves it when you kiss him all over, when you suck at his skin like you're hungry for him. he loves the simmering tension that rises every time you grind against each other through your clothes. his heart is racing with excitement.
he could literally just dry hump and make out with you all day and be totally fine with not going any further.
definitely a body worshipper. sex with you functions as a platform where he can express his gratitude. in the best way possible, he cannot believe you're real. he has to convince himself by touching every part of your body and leaving kisses in its wake.
there isn't a pattern to the roles gaara assumes during sex. it's very easy for him to switch depending on the day and the mood. he can easily alternate between a more submissive role, and a more dominant role. if you want him to fuck your brains out, he can do that for you. if you wanna be the one fucking his brains out, he'll let that happen. he's very receptive to YOUR needs.
touched on here, but i lowk see him as a service sub. as mentioned earlier, gaara is a man of action. he finds fulfilment in serving you. whether it's washing your hair in the shower, gardening for you, drawing you a bath, or clearing the clutter on your desk, he will do anything in his power to make you pleased. it gives him a sense of purpose outside of being the kazekage.
ordinary behaviour become part of a prolonged foreplay that excites you both. he thrives on the knowledge that you will reward him for his service in the bedroom.
gaara tries his hardest to keep his work life and his private life separate. but if at any point you let a "lord kazekage" slip out of your lips... he's going to be thinking about that for a while. he really likes it when you say it. maybe he'll get you to say that when he's driving his dick into you.
gaara enjoys being talked to during sex. it doesn't necessarily have to be dirty talk, but just words that assure him that you ARE, in fact, having a good time. he'll even ask you straight up, "am i doing well?" take that opportunity to praise him, please.
be shameless with him. as mentioned in the romantic headcanons, do not treat him like something fragile. sex is part of the emotional bond you both share. restraining yourself, or being too gentle will make him think you don't trust him enough to handle all that. PUT IT ON HIM! do tricks on it! trust that he'll tell you when it's enough. have faith in him.
his favourite places to be touched includes his neck and his inner thighs. if you kiss him in either of those places, he will be rock hard.
lowkey, he's into watching you masturbate.
he wants to hear each breath you take and each moan that comes out of your mouth. he wants to see what kind of facial expressions you make when you're being absorbed by pleasure. he wants to watch you cum, knowing that you did it because you love him. because he exists.
he also loves watching the way your hands move when you bring yourself to climax. it's like he's piecing together a puzzle. so this is how you touch yourself. he's making a mental note.
gaara doesn't care about whether or not he cums. for him, the purpose of sex isn't to finish. it's more about physical and psychological intimacy; to get even closer to you. sex with you is the ultimate act of vulnerability. you have stripped him down to the final layer. he is literally laid bare before you. cumming would be great, but it's just not as important as you and how you feel in that moment. if you cum, that's good enough for him.
You're happily working your way through a table laden with sweets. Konoha's festival may not be your favorite place to spend an afternoon. The crowds, the noise, the endless lines… but you can certainly appreciate one thing. Free desserts: rice cakes, sweet bean buns, dango. If there's one thing capable of convincing you to brave a crowd, it's an unlimited assortment of confectionery.
You become so engrossed in sampling everything that you almost fail to notice someone quietly joining you. Then again… Sai would be easier to notice if he announced his presence instead of quietly materializing beside people. You glance at him, cheeks still full of soft rice cake. He smiles at you. It doesn't mean anything, he does that a lot.
"You look very nice," he finally says.
You hurriedly chew. "Th-thank you."
Unfortunately, the three seconds it takes you to respond are more than enough time for Sai to continue.
"I like that there is potato starch on the tip of your nose." He thinks for a moment, hoping to draw the perfect parallel and impress you with his awesome verbal skills. "It makes it look like you were snorting—"
"Okay, that's enough, Sai," you interrupt.
He obediently falls silent. You glare at him for a second, but his soft facial expression gets in the way of you getting mad. With a small sigh, you wipe the dusting of starch from your nose.
Sai's shoulders sink ever so slightly and he frowns.
"I was going to draw you like that… I thought it looked cute."
You raise an eyebrow. "…Cute?"
You glance at him and realize he's completely sincere. Now /both/ of you are smiling like two idiots. But, well. You can't lie. He's pretty cute himself. Without warning, you reach up and gently boop his nose with your fingertip, still lightly dusted with potato starch.
"There. Now you can look cute too."
Sai blinks. His hand instinctively rises toward his nose before stopping halfway, as though he isn't sure whether removing it would be socially appropriate.
You grin, but it falters after taking a longer look at him.
"Hmph. Your skin's too pale," you grumble, disappointed. "You can barely even see the starch."
"…I see." He considers this very seriously. "I suppose I'll need more."
Before you can stop him, he's already reaching toward one of the trays of rice cakes. You burst into laughter.
"…Sai. I was just joking around. You don't need to do that."
"Oh."
This idiot. You're definitely taking him on a date.
────» Yamato.
The gently sloping hill is blanketed in wildflowers. Yamato sits beside you on the outdoor blanket, enjoying the quiet afternoon as a warm summer breeze rolls lazily across the field. The grass sways in soft waves, carrying with it the scent of earth and blossoms. It's peaceful. Exactly the kind of day the two of you rarely get to share. Yamato doesn't have many days off, after all, so you intend to make the most of this one.
"I like those," you say, pointing toward a distant patch of your favorite flowers growing farther up the hill.
Yamato follows your gesture.
"I see." He studies them for a moment. "They're beautiful."
His gaze lingers there a little longer, quietly thoughtful. You don't mind the silence, it's not awkward with him. The breeze, the chirping of birds, and simply having him beside you are more than enough.
After another moment, he speaks. "Give me a minute."
Curious, you watch as he places one hand against the ground. You feel the flow of chakra, and almost immediately, see the meadow respond to his touch. The thin leaves of grass around you stretch upward as though an entire week has passed in the blink of an eye. Tiny buds emerge from the earth and unfurl, until bright blossoms bloom in every direction. They form a neat circle around your blanket. You reach down and carefully pick one of the flowers. It looks perfect, indistinguishable from the ones growing naturally farther up the hill.
"…Yamato."
He smiles sheepishly before you can thank him. "I'm glad you like them."
Then his expression changes. His eyes dart around the suddenly much more colorful meadow, and he rubs the back of his neck.
"Do you… Do you think this upsets the ecological equilibrium?" he suddenly asks. Truly a man of concerns.
You blink. Of course that's where his mind went. You take a moment to genuinely consider it: a small patch of extra wildflowers, not invasive species, no trees bursting through the blanket, no forest swallowing the hill.
"…Nope. If anything, I think the bees are going to have a fantastic day."
Yamato looks around at the blossoms once more. The worry leaves his face, replaced by a smile again. Satisfied that he hasn't accidentally committed ecological sabotage, he leans back beside you.
The two of you spend the rest of the afternoon watching the flowers sway gently in the summer breeze. One more little patch of color in the meadow will remain for the entire summer as a little landmark of your date.
────» Gaara.
The room is so peaceful that you don't even realize you've fallen asleep.
When you finally wake, the golden light streaming through the windows has shifted across the floor, painting circles over the tatami. It's no longer as warm as it was during daytime.
You blink away the last traces of sleep. Then you notice that a blanket has been draped neatly over your legs. You smell something pleasant lingering in the air: a cup of tea sits nearby, still warm.
Across the room, Gaara sits with a book in his hands. He's reading quietly, slowly turning one page after another.
For a moment, you simply watch him. You almost don't want to break the silence. But eventually, he notices your gaze. He gives you a gentle smile. The sort of smile that he rarely wore years ago, but now seems to come naturally whenever you're around.
Staring at him a moment too long, your face suddenly grows warm. …Wait. You'd fallen asleep. In the Kazekage's personal chambers. On his bed. And the first thing you'd done after waking up was ogle him. You're not entirely familiar with the etiquette in Suna, but you're pretty sure that this is very, very, very rude.
"You should've woken me," you mumble, unsure how to apologize for… all of that.
Gaara closes his book. His gaze is soft, and so are his words. "I couldn't. You looked too comfortable."
A soft sigh escapes you before you even realize it. He's always so serene that it's contagious, and you can't help but relax as well. You only hope, perhaps a bit selfishly, that he enjoys your company half as much as you enjoy his.
As though hearing the thought before you've spoken it aloud, he soothes your worry: "I like having you here. So… Stay as long as you want."
His sentence ends a bit too abruptly, almost like he wanted to add a 'please' at the end, but hesitated. You smile anyway. The bed is, admittedly, far too comfortable to abandon just yet. Certainly more comfortable than the futon waiting for you at home. Rolling onto your side, you reach for the teddy bear resting beside the pillow and pull it into your arms. It smells faintly of clean linen… and of Gaara. More than any other object in the room.
You peek over the plush's head. He's pretending to have resumed reading. Pretending, because every now and then, you catch the corner of another tiny smile before he lowers his eyes back to the page.
Maybe staying a little longer isn't a bad idea after all.
────» Kankuro.
Ahh, the searing desert sun is going to drive you insane. The shadows cast by Suna's rounded buildings aren't enough to hide you from the heat, and staying cooped up indoors all day sounds like a different kind of torture. Kankuro told you to wait on a bench while he went to buy ice cream. Unfortunately, the bench feels about as cool as sitting on the surface of the sun.
"There was a long line," he sighs, breaking your inner monologue of a barrage of complaints. He hands you your favorite flavor. It's nice of him to remember that. "Apparently every idiot in Suna decided they wanted ice cream today."
You can't possibly imagine why. But you don't sass him, and graciously accept his offering. Finally! But before either of you can enjoy the summer delight, a small voice chimes beside you. A little boy, no older than six, runs over with an enthusiasm that only a child would have in this unbearable heat. Kankuro frowns.
"Oh, it's you."
The kid nods and beams, oblivious to the fact that he's impeding on a very important date of a very important guy. "You said you were gonna show me Crow again!"
With a dramatic sigh, Kankuro hands you his ice cream for safekeeping. He unfastens the scroll strapped to his back. With a puff of smoke, Crow appears. The child gasps, in awe. You look it over as well, not that you hadn't seen it before, but in the daylight outside of Kankuro's workshop, that thing looks even more terrifying. The boy doesn't seem to mind though, and asks Kankuro if Crow can wave. So Crow waves. Then he asks if Crow can spin. Crow spins. You diligently finish your ice cream as you watch the performance. Just when you're done with yours, a chunk of Kankuro's scoop slides down the side of the cone and drops on your hand. Hmph. Well, there's only way to solve this problem, you think.
"Dance! Can you make Crow dance?" the kid asks after having witnessed thirty perfect twirls. Yeah, you counted.
Kankuro's eye twitches. "Crow doesn't dance. He's a war machine built for battle, not a geisha."
The boy pouts. A moment after, his mother calls out to him, and he runs off with a short 'bye-bye'. Kankuro exhales. If the mother hadn't called out to him, you have a feeling the kid would've learnt a new swear word.
"Finally," Kankuro mutters, turning to you and reaching for his ice-cream. His ice-cream… that is not there anymore. He slowly looks from your empty cone to your lips, still glistening in the sun. It is such a mystery, he thinks, where his ice cream could have disappeared to. "I can't believe you couldn't wait five minutes."
You think five minutes is unreasonable. This was a lesson Kankuro had to learn the hard way. "Nope, the sun wasn't gonna wait. It was basically melting already, so technically I didn't even do anything wrong. I didn't let it go to waste."
Kankuro rolls his eyes. "Was it at least good?"
You look at your hand, which still has the little bit of ice-cream that drooped earlier.
"Try it," you joke, extending your hand towards Kankuro.
To your surprise, he leans down and actually licks it.
"Eh, it's alright."
You stand still for a moment, astounded. Kankuro is so down-to-earth and goofy that it's easy to forget he's basically Suna royalty. You look away. You're pretty sure any second now your cheeks will flush a darker shade, and you're not giving him the satisfaction.

✨️The two of you are on a mission together, and the night is really cold✨️
It's a long one! And! We have new characters! Fanfiction gods blessed me the past couple of days with inspiration and I had so much fun, so I added Itachi, Neji and Shino.
Characters: Kakashi, Sasuke, Shikamaru, Naruto, Gaara, Kiba, Rock Lee, Itachi, Neji, Shino
CW: 18+, suggestive, mdni
Kakashi
He proposed it first.
To be honest, there was no other way. It was so cold you didn't feel your feet and hands already. Sleeping alone would have been risky, not to say: stupid.
The thought of it made your stomach flutter in a weird way, even if the purpose was simply survival.
You set your small camp together in silence, moving with the effortless coordination you'd developed over the course of the mission.
You both were tired, already travelling for a long time, far from villages and comforts.
Kakashi put his bedroll next to the campfire, in a small nook provided by a big tree trunk, shielding you from the freezing wind.
"You can sleep first," Kakashi said, crawling under the thin fabric and making room for you.
It was too cold and you were too tired to even hesitate. Maybe later, if the gods let you make it out of this mission alive, you would come back to this moment and have time to process that you slept in the same bedroll with Kakashi Hatake, the man you were yearning for for ages.
Now you just squeezed yourself inside the cover, as respectfully as the situation allowed.
"I-" Kakashi cleared his throat. "I know it's probably uncomfortable, but if you turn to face me, I could warm your hands a bit."
Your heart started pounding just on the thought of that.
You slowly wiggled your body to lay on your side. Your gaze settled on his chest, dressed in the black shirt. You didn't have the courage to look up.
His hands found yours.
"Your fingers are cold as ice," he sounded worried. "Do you want to put them under my shirt, skin to skin? It'll be the fastest way to warm them up."
You considered the possibility that you already died and your body was laying somewhere, frozen still. And now you were experiencing your personal heaven.
"Okay," you agreed in a high pitched voice.
He took your hands and put them under his clothes, pressing them against his chest, just like that.
You were cursing your stupid fingertips for being too stiff to feel anything beside the warmth.
But it was his warmth, and that was more than enough.
----------------------------------------
Sasuke
Neither of you wanted to admit that you were too exhausted to continue your journey.
It was late at night, the cold rain was robbing your bodies of the last ounces of warmth. You were shivering under your dark cloak, pushing forward only on pure stubbornness.
Suddenly, Sasuke stopped under a slope providing a small shelter from the rain.
You shot him a questioning look.
"We're stopping for the night," he said. "I can hear your teeth chattering from a few feet away."
"I'm fine," you said firmly. Even if it wasn't true, showing even a hint of weakness in front of him never sat well with you.
"Sure," he answered with arms crossed on his chest. "If you faint along the way, I'll just leave you."
"Oh, how lucky I am to have a teammate like you."
"We're staying there until sunrise," he ordered, ignoring your comment. "I'll make a fire."
You hid under the slope, grateful for the break. It was so relieving not to feel heavy rain hitting your skull incessantly for hours you almost wanted to cry. You sucked it up instead and took off the cloak, heavy from water and unpleasantly sticking to your skin.
When the campfire was ready, Sasuke followed your footsteps and joined you on the ground. You unpacked both of your bedrolls.
"Your lips are blue," said Sasuke, his dark eyes glancing over your face. "Do you have any spare clothes?"
"No."
He murmured something angrily.
"Then we will share."
"What?"
"I have a spare set of clothes, they should be dry. You can take the top."
When you finally undestood what he was proposing, your face instantly went red.
"I-I think I'll be alright, we have the fire..."
Sasuke thought for a second.
"No," he said strictly. "If you fall ill, we'll fuck up the whole mission. We need to change in dry clothes and warm ourselves up as quickly as possible."
"You want me to stay just in your shirt?" you asked in a faint voice.
"It'll be long enough on you."
"But you'll be left with nothing but pants. You'll get cold."
"Not if we stay close to each other. Stop inventing problems and just do as I say."
He pulled his clothes out of the bag and gave you a neatly folded shirt.
"Change now. I'll turn around."
You stopped trying to change his mind. The fact was, the cold clothes stuck to your body really made it impossible to warm up. And if Sasuke himself was offering you his shirt, you're gonna take it, for fucks sake.
It really was long enough to at least cover your ass. The fabric was dry and thick, and it smelled nice. You changed into it quickly and rushed to your bedroll, burying yourself in it up to your nose.
You didn't dare to look at Sasuke until he put his bedroll down right next to yours.
He was indeed shirtless. Droplets from his still-wet black hair were streaming down his arms and chest, slowly drawing lines on his skin, curving around muscles.
Miraculously you weren't cold anymore.
-------------------------------------
Shikamaru
"I'm freezing my ass off," you muttered angrily, rubbing your hands together.
He was the one leading your two-person team on this mission, and it was his idea you'd stay the night at some ruins at the top of the hill. The observing point was great, but you couldn't even light a fire without being spotted. And the night was freezing cold.
"Can we mourn your ass in silence," asked Shikamaru with his usual annoyed tone. "Just try to get some sleep."
"I already tried, smartass. Not everyone is like you - capable of sleeping in any conditions."
"Not any. I can't sleep when someone is constantly whining."
You stayed silent for a whole minute.
"I think my corner of this stupid hut is colder than yours."
"Then come here."
You hesitated for a second.
"Can't we just switch places?"
"I'm not moving anywhere."
"Fine."
You took your bedroll and dragged it across the floor, stopping about a foot away from Shikamaru. It seemed proper enough.
"Happy?" he asked, when you lay back down.
You checked.
"No. It's as cold as before."
He sighed.
"I thought women store more fat under their skin to stay warm."
"Women have slower metabolism, you dumbass," you hissed. "And estrogen makes us feel cold easier. It's basic knowledge."
His silence was the best proof that he didn't know about that, which would give you satisfaction, if you weren't so uncomfortable.
"I'm sorry I didn't take it under consideration," he said, and it was surprisingly nice for his standards.
"It's okay. It's just this fucking stone floor, cold as ice."
"All i can offer is lying on me instead," Shikamaru said in this specific voice you heard from him a couple of times before. The voice you couldn't really decipher, if he was joking or being serious.
"That would be nice," you said, just to tease him. If he wanted to fluster you, he picked the wrong one.
Shikamaru lifted his head enough to look at you. His dark eyes were curious, as if he was checking how serious you were.
"Then come here."
It suddenly became a game of who will back down first. And you, if you were honest, didn't like to lose.
You stood up, and he opened up the zipper of his sleeping bag.
You moved over him, and he was looking at you with a challenge in his eyes.
You knelt down with his body between your legs and he... became red.
"Don’t get all worked up, pervert," you said, knowing damn well you won this round.
But then he put his big hands at your hips, not breaking the eye contact, and suddenly something in you shifted. Your throat got dry.
"Just lay down already, smartass," he answered with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
--------------------------------------
Naruto
"It's so cold," you stated the obvious, shivering in your sleeping bag.
You and Naruto were spending the night under the bare sky, with nothing to shield you from the freezing wind.
"I know exactly what to do," said Naruto, getting straight down to work.
He left his bedroll and started taking off his shoes.
"What the hell are you doing?" you asked. When it came to him, everything was possible, and you were not sure yet if you should be concerned.
"I remember it from training! When it's really cold, and you're with someone, you can share one sleeping bag together, but facing opposite ways. This way, I can put my feet under your armpits, and you can do the same. Get it? It's a great hack to not lose your feet in freezing temperatures!"
"Naruto," you tried not to laugh. He was so proud of himself. "We didn't shower for two days. Get your feet back into your shoes."
"Oh, come on, give it a try!"
"Won't happen. It's not even freezing, just cold. Our feet are safe, I think."
"Fine." Naruto put his shoes back with a pouty face.
Suddenly, he brightened up again.
"What about hands?" he asked.
"What about hands?" you repeated.
"I can get into your sleeping bag and you can warm your hands under my armpits."
"And let you stick your hands under mine? Nice try, Naruto."
"No, just your hands. I'm not that cold anyway. With you in the bedroll, I think I would be alright."
His face was so cute and innocent, as always. And you didn't really mind sleeping next to him.
"Fine. Come here," you said, making space for him.
He rushed to you with the biggest smile. The sleeping bag squeezed you both tighter than you thought it would. Suddenly you found yourself closer to Naruto's body than you have ever been.
He wiggled and moved for a while, making himself comfortable, not minding tossing you around a little. When he finally stopped, you had one leg around his hips and his arm under your head.
"This is nice," he said, smiling down at you, blushing a little.
It was indeed very nice.
"Now put your hands under my armpits."
"You know what, there's no need," you said in a sleepy voice.
------------------------------------------
Gaara
You had no idea the desert nights were that cold.
Not being fully prepared for your mission was not your style and made you ashamed of yourself. Especially since you were with the Kazekage himself.
He, used to the desert climate, had a nice, thick sleeping bag.
You took only your thinnest blanket. It was embarrassing.
While both of you were getting ready to sleep, you hoped he wouldn't notice. At first it seemed like it - he wished you a goodnight and closed his eyes.
You curled up under your cover and watched his peaceful face. The view was breathtaking - dunes to the horizon, night sky dusted with stars. And him, with his maroon hair - such a perfect addition to the landscape.
It didn't take long for you to start trembling with cold.
"Well, all I can do is make it to the morning," you thought.
But the temperature dropped so much it was hard to bear. You hid your hands between your thighs, but your feet dressed in light shoes, so comfortable during the day, were freezing. Your nose started running.
"Fantastic," you thought, feeling more and more uneasy. "I was supposed to show myself from the best side. And now he will see me unprepared and sick. Couldn't be better."
Too tired to beat yourself up endlessly, you finally fell asleep.
A quiet sound of crackling fire woke you up.
You opened your eyes and didn't see the stars.
You jumped to your feet in fear, drawing a kunai.
But then you saw Gaara sitting next to the campfire, giving you the reassuring smile.
You looked around and realized you're in some kind of cave, made of... sand.
Gaara's sand.
The realisation hit you like a brick.
"Are you warm now?" Gaara asked quietly, worry in his voice.
"Yes," you choked out.
He made a whole shelter, just so you could be warm.
Your heart started pounding.
"I'm so sorry," you whispered, not able to look him in the eyes.
"For what?" he looked confused.
"I caused you so much trouble!"
He shook his head.
"You were taking care of me for the whole day. I should make sure you're comfortable during the night. I'm sorry that i didn't notice earlier."
-----------------------------------------
Kiba
"Hey, is something wrong?" Kiba asked, pointing at you suspiciously, like you were trying to hide something from him.
Because you were. And he, as always, noticed a change in you.
You were the one guarding your little camp, while he and Akamaru tried to catch some sleep. You were supposed to switch later.
The thing was, it was so freaking cold. On one hand, it successfully chased the sleep away. On the other, you were so jealous of Kiba and Akamaru, cuddling together so peacefully.
"Everything is fine," you answered Kiba's question.
Akamaru lifted his head, silently judging you. They both knew you were lying.
"Sure. Your scent is telling me something different."
"Stop smelling me."
"Are you not feeling well?"
You gave up, knowing he won't leave you alone.
"I'm fine. I'm just cold."
"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked, surprised.
"Akamaru, let's go."
"What are you doing?" you asked, watching them getting up and stretching.
"We can cuddle in a pack," answered Kiba like it was the most obvious solution.
And maybe it was in the Inuzuka clan, you thought.
Before you could voice your objections, Kiba sat next to you and wrapped his arm around you, pulling you closer.
Akamaru lay down by your side and placed his big, fluffy head on your lap.
Your cheeks started burning. It was not usual for you to cuddle with anybody, especially on a mission. For them, it was like the most natural thing in the world.
Kiba's hand caressed your arm. He leaned his head back and not long after started snoring quietly.
It took you a couple of minutes to relax your stiff body. You even gathered the courage to rest your head on Kiba's chest.
It was warm and comfortable. You heard his strong heartbeat and it made you feel... safe.
------------------------------------------
Rock Lee
You were pretty sure Lee would want to continue your travel for the whole night. He didn't show any signs of exhaustion, not even the slightest hint of fatigue.
You couldn't say the same about you. You needed a break and, more importantly, to warm yourself up. The night was so cool you started to worry you'd catch a cold.
You were embarrassed to ask for setting up a camp, but it was Lee - you knew he wouldn't judge you too much.
"Lee, I'm afraid I need to stop," you said. "It's so cold I can barely feel my body."
He turned around to face you, instantly worried.
"Oh! Why didn't you tell me sooner?" he asked, taking off his backpack. Before you realised what he was doing, he took out his cloak and wrapped it around your arms.
"Look, i think we could set up a camp near these trees. Let's go, it's not too far."
He led you there, sat you down and started setting up a tent.
"Lee, you don't have to do it all by yourself-" you tried to interrupt him, but he gently took tent pegs off your hands.
"I can see now how tired you are. Just rest, i'll take care of it this time."
Just a couple of minutes later the tent was ready. Lee took your backpacks inside and called you over.
"Quick, to the sleeping bag," he ordered and you noticed that he zipped the two of them together, so they became one big sleeping space.
Lee blushed under your look.
"The most efficient way to warm someone up is with another person's body heat," he said with his usual enthusiasm.
You could only blame yourself for the turn your thoughts took.
He got into the sleeping bag first and lifted the fabric in a welcoming gesture, unaware of your sinful imagination.
And sinful eyes, noticing the tensed biceps of the arm he was leaning on, and the muscles of his chest, visible in that position even beneath his jumpsuit.
You slipped into the bedroll, getting redder and redder in your face.
"Do you mind if I cuddle you?" Lee asked shyly.
"I don't," your voice was hoarse.
He went closer, putting one arm around your waist - respectfully, hand placed on the ground.
The heat radiating from him was so comforting, so tempting for your freezing body.
You switched to your side, becoming a little spoon, and he followed up immediately, cuddling you from the back.
His breath tickled your neck.
"You'll be warm soon," Lee said in uplifting tone.
You quickly forgot about the cold, focusing on all of the places where your bodies were touching.
-----------------------------------------
Itachi
Itachi had never missed any detail in his life, you were pretty sure, so it was not really a surprise, when he said:
"I can see you're cold and exhausted. You can just tell me, there's no need to push over your limits."
"Noted," you said, not seeing the point in arguing. It was true you tend to overwork yourself and he had spoken about it with you once. Or twice.
"Let's take a break. There's a small cave, half an hour from there, on the east. We can spend the night there."
You didn't question his familiarity with the area. Working with Itachi was accepting that he simply knew things.
The cave had just enough room for two people, but in those conditions it was more than enough.
"I remembered it being bigger," said Itachi. "It'll have to do."
You sat in the deepest corner, knees to your chest. It was nice to have a shelter from the wind. And it was nice to watch Itachi's hands, when he was lighting a fire.
It was a little secret pleasure of yours. His long fingers had always been mesmerizing to you.
"Come, sit closer to the fire," he ordered. You obeyed, squeezing yourself between the cave wall and his body. You sat there in silence, arm to arm; the fire slowly warmed you up. Your muscles stopped trembling with cold and your body finally relaxed a little. Sleepiness caught you off guard; suddenly it was impossible to keep your eyes open. You slowly drifted off.
You woke up in Itachi's arms.
It took you a second to realize that you fell asleep as you were sitting next to him. You probably just fell on him and he was too kind not to wake you up.
You jerked back in terror and embarrassment.
Itachi let you move away from him, but didn't take the arm he was holding you with off your back.
"I'm so sorry," you murmured, feeling all hot and flustered.
"It's okay. Let's just sleep."
You looked him in his dark, forever-tired eyes. It was always so hard to decipher what was hiding behind them. Especially when they were as close.
He gently pulled you closer, and you obeyed, letting him place you in his arms.
-----------------------------------------
Neji
Your hands were shaking so much you were barely able to lit the fire at your camp.
It was the coldest night in your life, and it caught you under the bare sky, in the middle of a mission far, far from home. You couldn't believe when it began to snow - small white flakes were peacefully falling from the sky, making you feel completely alone in the world.
You were travelling solo for over a week now, and it already took a toll on you. Even basic human interaction felt in this moment like something precious, undervalued by you till now.
Shinobi instinct kicked in even despite your exhaustion. Someone was coming.
You quickly stamped out the fire, covered up your tracks and hid on a tree.
You weren't expecting to hear familiar voice.
"Byakugan."
Neji came alone. You couldn't mistaken his dark, long hair, tall posture and, above all, striking light eyes, which were piercing right through you at this moment.
"Come down immediately. You're so cold I have almost mistaken you for a tree branch." His voice was harsh, but you knew him well enough to know it meant he was worried.
You jumped off the tree.
"Neji? Something bad happened?" You asked, feeling your stomach dropping.
"Not yet," he answered, observing you carefully. Swollen veins showed up near his eyes.
"Everything alright?" You asked, feeling uneasy.
"No."
He knelt, taking off his backpack, and began building a new campfire in a place of destroyed one.
"I finished my mission earlier and wanted to check on you. Definitely wasn't expecting to find you in that state," he said angrily.
Flick of a match, and fire spread on dry sticks neatly formed into the stack. The way flames reflected in his eyes was hypnotizing.
"In what state?" You asked, sitting down. You were so tired you allowed the possibility that he was just a product of your imagination. Which should probably scare you.
"You're close to hypothermia," he answered. "Don’t stop moving. Stand up and walk around me."
You simply obeyed, not wanting to worry Neji - imagined or not.
He quickly finished with fire and set up your sleeping bag.
"Now get inside," he ordered, and you welcomed it with a sigh of relief. You could barely stand from exhaustion.
The inside of the sleeping bag was warm and cosy, probably. To be honest, you couldn't feel that much.
Neji wrapped himself in his bedroll like it was a cloak. Then he took you in his arms, sweeping you of the forest floor.
You gasped, surprised. Strong hands pulled you close. Neji sat near the fire, placing you on his lap.
"You can't manhandle me like that," you said in a weak voice.
"We'll talk about it next time."
One hand was rubbing your legs, from feet upwards, the other took care of your arms. You rested your head on his chest.
"Don’t fall asleep," Neji rasped to your ear.
"Are you angry at me?"
"Yes."
"I can't control the weather, you know."
He sighed.
"I know. I'm sorry."

Shino
You always liked missions, where it was just the two of you. You seemed to understand each other well, both operating the best in silence. Shino was your only teammate you felt comfortable with, when you were not talking- he was giving you the space to simply exist, without wasting energy on socialising.
Since you both were mostly living in your pretty closed up worlds, you didn't expect him to notice, that you were not doing great.
You decided to spend the night under the trees, but the temperature dropped too low.
You tried to fall asleep, burying yourself under the thick layers of sleeping bag, a blanket, and your coat, but you just felt too cold.
"Your limbs are too cold," you heard a voice from under another tree, where Shino earlier took his bedroll.
"My limbs and everything else," you answered, trying not to sound too whiny.
"How do you know? You're cold too?"
"No, my bugs told me."
"Oh, right."
You thought it would end on this simple exchange, but a moment later you heard some noise. You lifted your head to see Shino dragging his sleeping bag to you.
You quietly observed, as he placed it close to your body and knelt on the ground. As if it wasn't surprising enough, he took off his coat. Which he rarely had been taken off.
He placed it at the top of your mound.
"Thank you," you said, really touched by his kindness. "But aren't you cold now?"
"I suggest we cuddle," answer Shino, which made you question everything you had known about him to this moment.
"Kiba taught me this on long missions," he explained, shrugging his arms.
"Oh," you suddenly felt... butterflies. And they were not Shino's. "Sure, we can cuddle."
He lay down as close to you as he could and snuggled to your side. You looked up - it was nice to see his dark brown hair, usually hidden under a hood. You never saw Shino's face from this close. The dark glasses were shielding his eyes, as always, and you thought how nice it would be to see them.
"You're staring at me," said Shino.
"I can't see if you're doing the same," you replied, which was a sneaky move from you, you had to admit.
As you were hoping to, he took off his glasses, sliding them on the top of his head.
His eyes were dark, with surprisingly long lashes casting shadows on his cheeks.
You lost your words for a minute, just admiring how beautiful they were.
And realizing how hot you were getting.
"I think cuddling works," noticed Shino in a deep voice.
