Songwriting was well within it's own realm of understanding, or at least that's what Yin normally told people. It was a messy mish-mash or story telling, poetry and composing. And while there should have been a set "recipe" for songwriting, like one part bluh and three parts blah, there wasn't. It's you's to wing through and try to figure what "ingredients" you want to use. Maybe some romance and sap or perhaps sadness and angst. Which was why songs really shouldn't sound alike but, there are always people trying to match recipes.
Which was why Yin normally turned people away when they asked for her "tutelage" on songwriting. Call it a journey of self-discovery if you'd like but, this was something you had to do on your own. It took months and years of getting better at expression and writing. STC hadn't immediately put her first song with them as a title track, even if she had been writing three years. The most Yin did for other's was take a look and then give her opinion, possibly some criticism if they asked.
So how Yin ended up agreeing to help Selene with songwriting was beyond her. While she wanted to sit her down with a pen and paper and simply tell her to write whatever she felt like, Yin figured it's be a terrible idea to throw one of her artists into the fray. So here she was, on the couch found in her studio with papers strewn all over the table in front of her. "So do you have a general idea of what you'd like to write about?"
