What resources helped you best to learn Norwegian?
My first tool was a course called "Teach Yourself"
Originally it was a book and CD course but since then I'm pretty sure I've seen it uploaded to YouTube
So yeah "Teach Yourself: Norwegian" kinda got me to where I could recognize the tone and cadence of natural speakers and taught me my first hundred or so words. Maybe 200 I'm not sure.
I let that course run my life for about 2 weeks. In the shower, in my sleep, in my car, everywhere I went, everything I did, had the background of that course going
When I came to Norway I was able to hold extremely basic conversations if people spoke slowly and used easy words that I recognized
Then some time later, I had a Norwegian course in Norway with a teacher who I could ask questions. I think it was twice a week, 4 hours a day
They put me in the intermediate class since I kinda sorta already knew some words and wouldn't be completely lost in a conversation. That was a huge benefit because there was no switching back and forth to English
Even if I asked a question in English, the teacher would answer and explain everything in Norwegian. Like... basically imagine there was no other language. That's what she was doing. I've gotta think it's somewhat similar to what they do with small children. Small children aren't stupid, they just haven't seen things, and they all come from different backgrounds, so you can go from the basics to more advanced and interesting topics without switching languages. That's what the teacher did. If I was completely lost, she'd take it all the way back to basics and bring me up to speed from the most simple concepts up to whatever the actual subject was. It wasn't just me though, she did that with all the students. I think there were 5 or 6 of us and while she did have a lesson plan, she would let us kinda be interested in whatever we were interested in because getting us to understand things we were interested in was a great way to teach us the language
I've since adopted a similar teaching style and was able to teach my kids some basics about radio frequency and how radar works etc and some of the math behind it. It's honestly very useful
Thanks for asking!
