So.. How are you coming up with all this stuff for your fantasy story? Like, what's your process? Is the brainstorming kind of random or what? I'm just wondering cuz it all sounds very cool and like something I want to read immediately.

well, it’s far enough in the planning/building process that it’s not so much random anymore? there’s at least framework for major plots through the four books plus the overarching stuff, most of the major players have been conceptualized (tho i’m always guilty of adding MORE CHARACTERS always), and for the most part, the races have been figured out. dwarves aside. 

so right now my process is sort of “feel intense guilt over the owl and try to avoid my brother on skype”. my brother who is a history major and has a hard-on for nazis and dictators. he’s very good at helping me come up with the history of things. -v- 

and for the most part, the “how” of how we’re doing it is like… 90% of me going “this would be cool” and/or “i am tired of seeing this trope”. and an embarrassing amount of mass effect jokes/parallels. they won’t really come out in the actual writing of it but i don’t want to admit how many because it’s bad. also an entire character and arc resulted from my brother’s feelings about the game metro last light. 

(also the original emma concept with the curse and emerald thing came from a dream literally YEARS ago. but she got grafted into this project after the fact.) 

(the last 10% of our process right now is throwing disney/dreamworks songs at each other going “book four!” “THIS IS PAVELLAN!” “but consider this: phoenixes”)
