Agent of the Black Armada
Adalet hissed as she ran down the corridor, fangs bared and thick tail straight behind her. Her leather boots pounded against the wooden floor, and from time to time her shoulders and elbows caught on the handles that protruded on either side. “There’s nowhere to go, Kiet!” she shouted. “You may as well give it up.” Even as she spoke, the tom vanished through the door at the end of the corridor, slamming it shut behind him.
Adalet tore the door open and leapt nimbly across the gap in one smooth movement. The thick bracket that linked the carriages went past beneath her, as did the swiftly flowing ground. She landed deftly before the door to the next carriage, pulled it open and slipped inside. The corridor was empty save for a serving molly pushing a tray laden with drinks towards her. Adalet growled beneath her breath, ears flicking back and forth in search of her prey.
“You there, molly,” she hissed, “did a tom come this way? Big fellow, grey fur, long thin tail.” She could hear passengers moving about and talking in their compartments, but she did not detect Kiet’s heavy footfall, nor any of the unique signatures that she had come to know so well.
