I haven't seen TH8 yet but I'm really excited to see your thoughts and opinions on it on your blog, because I always enjoy your Quentin Tarantino Opinions(TM)
i should probably wait to reply to this until I’ve let the movie settle with me some, and I’ll probably do a more sober-minded writeup of my thoughts later but– there was absolutely no heart in this movie??? No real stakes to be had at all that made sense? And all of the characters were basically just a bunch of informed traits that went nowhere and had no real connection with one another??
Since you haven’t seen it yet, I’ll just use the scene from the trailer as an example, where Marquis just spews like a solid 30 seconds of exposition as to who John Ruth is and what he does and why he’s so badass... right in front of John Ruth and his prisoner who would certainly know these details already. That scene bothered me from the trailer alone, but the whole damn movie is just that. Surrounding characters explaining in-depth everyone else’s traits and backstory, which– has literally never been Tarantino’s style with characters and felt really forced and Bad? Like maybe he was going for a stylistic “bad, corny old writing” thing but it didn’t work at all like it has in the past? QT’s always been generally good at showing, not telling, and if he does take the time to tell instead of show there’s usually a pretty good reason for it, story-wise or stylistically.
Like just imagine if everyone in RD was constantly loudly telling each other about how much of a badass Mr. White is, and how he’s the best criminal in the world, how he’s unstoppable, but how he’s really driven by his morals and can be really compromised by his emotions, and then the whole movie just sort of scooted by without any of the scenes where Mr. White actually does anything related to those traits at all. All of the informed character traits just sort of fizzle or get mentioned and then never get touched upon again. That wasn’t even my only or biggest complaint it’s just the biggest one I can form into words rn idk
Idk if I’m gonna be a loner in the quento gang on this but this movie did absolutely nothing for me. Like worse than nothing considering how absolutely pumped i’ve been for a full year to see it.
And there’s my newest installment of Quentin Tarantino Opinions™
