Chapter 1 - The Tickening
"Grab the valuable stuff, don't waste time with anything we can't pawn off, and be quick about it!"
The store clerk was frozen like a deer in headlights as the thugs began to smash open the jewelry cases strewn around his shop. It had been a relatively quiet day in the peaceful city of Fourside, a city of prosperity and on the cutting edge of science, but with such a rich background there has always been the underlying threat of organised crime.
Mort's Jewelers wasn't exactly the biggest place to stage a heist, but perhaps it was for that very reason that Mort found himself holding his hands behind his head with a gun barrel pointed at his temple. His eyes darted around the room as he watched the group of three begin to pocket the glimmering treasures he had acquired over his many years, all sorts of rare looking items from amulets to watches. Futilely protesting their assault of his shop, Mort's focus was always brought back to the weapon aimed at his wrinkled forehead. He stood firmly but his voice quivered in fear, Mort wasn't sure if he was going to end up dead by the end of this encounter, let alone be able to earn a living.
The bandits seemed to be satisfied with their loot, however the suddenly emerging sound of police sirens was perturbing them.
The man who held the gun turned to Mort accusingly: "Did you call the cops old man?!" He barked.
Mort shook his head quickly and stuttered in reply: "N-no, Y-you've been watching me the whole t-time!". Mort's heart was racing, death was becoming a very real prospect to him at this point. The thieves communed and decided to wait out the sirens, using the old man as hostage if they had been busted.
It was at that point that the back door was opened and a young boy aged about 15 entered. He had striking blue hair and and orange eyes that were shielded by a pair of engineering goggles; his red jacket was stained with black oil stains and he was cleaning similar stains from his hands with a handkerchief as he came in.
He stood in the doorway and held the door half open, and addressing Mort he simply said "Gramps I've been trying to find a five millimeter coil for the watch that came in but at this point I'm pretty sure springs can't actually come in that size".
Almost immediately as he came in, the group of thieves held up guns to the boy too, and after he had finished talking he turned his head and finally took notice of the other men in the room. Realising what was going on he raised his hands, slowly stepped out of the doorway and closed the door behind him.
For about a minute or two they all stood silently, the sound of sirens still persisting in the air around them, but just as they were beginning to die down the blue haired boy shouted in alert: "Gramps your medicine! You're going to have a heart attack!".
The thieves were all shaken by the sudden yelling and all began pointing weapons reactively. Mort turned to look at the boy in confusion but as he opened his mouth to reply he felt a sudden jolt of pain as his foot was stomped on. Mort cried out and fell down below the counter with the boy cradling him.
The boy pleaded "Please, I have to get my gramp's medicine or else he's going to have a 'really loud' heart attack!", and pointed to the door he came in from. The bandits looked at each other exasperatedly and agreed to let the kid go back, with accompaniment.
The kid lead the bandit that was coming with him through the back door and down into the basement. Gadgets and trinkets were laying about the place in a disorganised fashion, with many of them placed on worktables and surrounded by oily tools and cloths. The kid began to frantically throw things out of the way and off tables, but his searching seemed to be uneventful. He called out to the man that had come with him:
"Can you look over there for a white jar with a grey lid on it?", the bandit was frustrated already but swallowed his temper to speed up their already drawn out mission. He began to work his way slowly through a few wooden boxes full of wrenches and bolts, even spotting a couple of nice looking watches that they hadn't seen upstairs. Putting a couple into his pockets, he eventually came across what seemed to be what they were looking for. Pulling out a container from far in the back of a shelving unit, he looked over the object that matched the description.
"Uh, is this what you want kid?" The man asked. He turned around to look for the kid, but to his surprise there didn't seem to be anyone else in the room anymore.
"Oh uh, yeah that's fine", came a response from behind him. He turned around to see two glowing green eyes staring at him from the shadows in the basement's corner. Before he could react a giant metal fist came down on his head and knocked him out.
On the upper floor the bandits were waiting impatiently for their comrade to return as the sirens had stopped meaning they could finally escape. Mort still sat hunched over still reeling in pain as he clasped his foot wondering what could possibly be going on, hoping for a miracle.
A loud thud vibrated through the floor.
Mort and the bandits were jolted by the sudden thump. No one was sure of where it came from or what made it. A second thud soon followed, and then with a mighty crash a huge metallic monster broke out from under the wooden flooring below them and landed across from the bandits. Stunned by its appearance the bandits simply stared in awe as it walked over slowly and sent one flying away with a sweep of its arm. The third attempted to make a quick getaway but the metal man detached an arm and shot it like a missile slamming into his back and propelling him through the door, breaking it open and pinning him to the wall on the other side of the street.
The monster looked over its carnage, and then turned to Mort who was also gawking at the destruction caused by it in a matter in moments. For a moment it just stared blankly, but then it presented a white jar and a sheepish voice projected out from the metal body "Don't worry gramps, I found the coils"
