Shots And Whispers

(This was written for our little private gift exchange and the prompt i was given was: Benji killing someone in a way that surprises Ethan I tried to the main beats of the prompt - benji killing someone, so hopefully that’s enough haha. ) 

It was only in those quiet moments, away from the death and danger, that Ethan Hunt could begin to make sense of his life. The new year would soon be upon them, and all he could focus on was another year of the same: saving the world and doing the impossible. 

This was all to say that for Ethan, the new year meant very little for him. Maybe in the past as a civilian such things would have occupied more of his mind, but after all this time as field agent and after all he’s lost, it’s become emblematic of his waning time left in the realm of the living. 

The stagnation was something that he was quite accustomed to. After all, with age comes with experience. And experience breeds banality that comes with familiarity. Despite this, he tried to push back those feelings. Such negativity would only cloud his judgement out in the field. 

They were somewhere out in the west coast, keeping an out for any illegal arms shipments. There was some intelligence suggesting that an abandoned warehouse was being used to store weapons for a notable crime organization. Brandt had requested that he, Luther, Benji and Jane all go out over the holidays to monitor any movement and confirm the intelligence.  

For a week or so, there is very little activity to be seen. So, most of their time has been spent staking out the warehouse and returning to their safe house to regroup and rest. They take turns to keep watch in case anything should happen. Everything is calm and quiet.

On the last night they’re scheduled to be at the warehouse, they decided to sneak inside for a final look. It’s mostly empty, save for some cardboard boxes and a few bikes. 

A gunshot rings out, interrupting the quiet like a sharp knife. It hits Ethan in his shoulder. As Benji calls out his name all Ethan can do is fall to the floor in shock. Ethan sees Benji shoot up at the ceiling multiple times before running up to him. Benji is saying something but throughout all the chaos Ethan can’t make it out. Luther and Jane carry him out to the van. He’s fading out now, unsure if he will wake up again.

Luckily for him, he does wake up again sometime later in their safe house. Luther reassures him that he’s been all patched up, and he should just rest for now. Ethan still wants to make sense of what happened at the warehouse, so he calls for Benji so they can talk. 

“How are you feeling there, tough guy?” Benji says to him, and while he recognizes the playful tone, Ethan can sense the worry in his voice. 

“I’m doing as well as I can despite the circumstances. Luther says I just need to rest up.” 

“I guess that’s good. You had us all worried there for a second. You had me really worried.”

“So, what actually happened to me?” 

“There was a guard up on the top catwalk of the building. He didn’t have a rifle or else your injury would be much different.” 

“Am I correct in assuming the shot the guard?” 

“Yeah. Not my finest work but it’s hard to make a clean shot from that distance with a handgun.” Ethan isn’t so much surprised that Benji had killed his would-be assassin, after all they were all field agents and killing came with the territory.

“Well, you saved my life, so thank you.” 

“You don’t need to thank me for that. We’re a team of course I’ve got your back.” 

There’s something that still bothers Ethan, however. 

“What were you saying to me in the warehouse?” Benji flinches at the question, which confuses Ethan.

“What do you mean?” “Back there, you whispered something to me, but I couldn’t make it out. What were you saying?”  

“It’s not important, don’t worry about it.” “Alright then.” With that Benji leaves and Ethan has time to dwell on what has happened. He’s certain what Benji said wasn’t nothing, but he can’t force the man to say anything. He tries to think back to that moment. Benji is comforting him, despite the chaos. Ethan starts to fade when Benji whispers “I love you.”  to him. 

“Oh.” 

He makes a conclusion: What kind of comedy was his life that he missed a love confession because he was shot? 

“Oh? Oh what?” Luther says to him. Ethan makes another conclusion: He probably shouldn’t have said that out loud. 

“It’s nothing. I’m just thinking.” Ethan says with a slight smile. Luther looks at him with suspicion but says nothing else. He probably knows anyway. 

He was in love with Benji. It was something that he’d try to push down but it never went away. So, to know that Benji may have loved him back was elating. He’ll wait until the time is right to bring it up again. New Year’s Eve would soon be upon them, and he’d need someone to spend it with. To find someone to love was an exciting thing after all.

24. Which fic of yours do you wish people would ask about more? Why?

This is going to sound really silly (given that it's technically my top MASH fic on ao3) but I really do sometimes wish more people would ask/talk about "ye who are weary, come home" (and it's semi-sequel "happily ever after... and after") because it's a reunion story! I get that there's a big triad component, but it also has piercintyre reuniting, Steve Newsom(e), etc. etc. etc.(something for everyone imo)

25. If you could remove one character from [insert fic]’s universe, who would it be? Why?

I'll be honest, I wasn't able to think of anything for this question, so my bad. 😖

Local chaotic Dumbass Here, Favorite benthan moment and why

okay, listen, i know there are a lot of Big Benthan Moments in the series but there is, one, very brief and subtle moment in Fallout that i love a lot

it’s a little after the paris chase, when benji, ethan, and luther (and lane) make it out of the canals and meet up with w*lker. benji was the first one to enter the garage up the stairs and this is obviously the first time he meets the fucker, and he isn’t sure who he is.

so he turns back to ethan for confirmation that this stranger is Okay, and ethan answers with a nod, and that’s all benji needed to see to know it’s fine

i just, love that unspoken conversation and trust a lot
