6, 16, and instead of top 5 of all time, top 5 you read this year?
What books have you read in the last month?
I have read nine books in June so far (I'm most of the way through the tenth) and if that sounds impressive it's because I work from home and have been trying (futily) to read more instead of scrolling. Also I read really fast lol. A lot of 2026 releases have had such promising premises and then they've just... been okay or not very good?
Summer Sisters, Judy Blume - ⭐⭐⭐
In Her Defense, Philippa Malicka - ⭐⭐ (more like 2.5)
Once and Again, Rebecca Serle - ⭐⭐⭐
Meet the Newmans, Jennifer Niven - ⭐⭐
Son of Nobody, Yann Martel - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Shock of the Light, Lori Inglis Hall - ⭐⭐
The Scoop, Erin Van Der Meer - ⭐⭐⭐
Lake Effect, Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney - ⭐⭐⭐
The Young Will Remember, Eve J. Chung - ⭐⭐⭐
How many books have you read this year?
Right now, I'm at 40. But I was unemployed until the start of June so... yeah.
Again, I have just not had a lot of luck with 2026 releases, including ones I was really anticipating! What is with my favourite authors releasing books that are just not as good as their previous ones? First TJR did this to me last year with Atmosphere, and now Kate Quinn with Astral Library???
But. There have been some winners (usual disclaimer: not listed in order).
The God of the Woods, Liz Moore
Hemlock & Silver, T. Kingfisher
Son of Nobody, Yann Martel
+ honourable mentions to First Time Caller by B.K. Borison and The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
