SUPERHERO 101
Lesson 16: How to be selfless.
“It’s my job.”
Lesson 1
You nodded, giving him a big smile. “Yeah, James, it’s me,” you whispered. Tears started to fall down his face, and he pulled you to him, and kissed you. It was a lot more desperate and rough than Pietro’s.
“(Y/N), (Y/N), (Y/N),” James mumbled you name between kisses. “I’ve missed you so much.”
“(Y/N), we need to- oh,” came Steve’s startled voice. Pulling away from James, you noticed how big and blue and vulnerable his eyes were. Your breaths mingled, and your heart pounded. Reluctantly, you turned to see Steve standing at the door, an unreadable expression on his face. He frowned at you, and you blushed a bright red.
“Right,” you mumbled, picking yourself up from the floor. Holding out a hand to James, he got up, his face a mess of emotions. His thoughts were so loud, and you could hear them as a constant buzzing in the back of your head. You tuned them out, and turned towards Steve. “How’s it going out there?” you asked, trying to break the tension.
“Fine, Lucas is gone,” he said absently, his eyes glued to James. His eyes were wide, and James was staring at anything but Steve, and he moved closer to your side.
“I know him, (Y/N),” he murmured, grabbing your hand. “But I don’t know if I remember him.”
You squeezed it, and you could see a flash of pain and hurt in Steve’s eyes, but he masked it, letting out a breath of air. “I know, James, but we can’t focus on that right now,” you told him, and you met Steve’s eyes. You too, Captain, you whispered into his mind.
“Right,” he answered out loud, and James watched him carefully. “Sam had to pull out- his wingpack was hit- Clint got a knife to his shooting arm, and Wanda got taken out by one of mutants here.”
You swore under your breath, and you could see the fog pressing against the windows. “So, we gotta leave right now?”
Steve nodded, and you swore again. “We have to get Bucky out, (Y/N),” Steve replied, and his grip on his shield tightened.
Nodding, you turned to the soldier, you hands still intertwined. “James,” you said quietly. “There’s a lot of men out there, and three people from our team are done. Now, Steve and I are heavy hitters, but we’ll need some help. I wouldn’t ask this of you if it wasn’t important, but I need your help.” But please don’t try to save me.
“I’ll do it,” he answered quickly, without hesitation. You pressed a gun into his free hand, and he took it. James looked nervous, and held the gun gingerly, but you gave him a smile.
“Hey, we’ll be okay, James, I promise,” you spoke, but your voice wavered a bit, and you hoped what you said was true. Dropping his hand, you turned towards Steve, a smile plastered onto your face. “Ready, Captain?”
“Sure thing, Genesis,” he responded, returning an equally fake smile. He ran out of the horrible room, and you followed, Bucky trailing behind you. The whole building was filled with fog, and you felt a bit of pride. You followed Steve through the winding halls of the base, unconscious Hydra soldiers on the ground. When you finally reached got out of the stuffy building, the air was gray, and you couldn’t see a thing.
“Well, I certainly outdid myself,” you said, and Steve let out a choked laugh. “I can’t see a god damn thing.”
“It’d be a good thing if we could-” Steve stopped in the middle of his sentence, growing stiff. James did the same thing, backing up so he was closer to you and Steve. Before you could ask what was wrong, you could feel it. The mass of people in your fog that thoughts were loud and hateful all pointed towards you and your soulmates loves of your life friends. And in that moment, you knew what you had to do.
“Steve,” you said quietly, your voice almost a whisper. “You need to go. Take James and the rest of the team and go.”
He swung his head around, gaping at you. “Genesis, what the hell are you talking about? I’m not going to leave you!” he whispered angrily.
“You can’t do this (Y/N),” James agreed, and the two best friends locked eyes.
You shook your head, and you could feel tears prickling in your eyes. At moments like this, you wish you could tell the future and be able to keep promises. “I’m sorry,” you whispered. “But you have to go.”
“But, (Y/N) you’ll-” die, get captured, get hurt, be gone and what if I never see you again?
“No,” you said harshly, cutting Steve off. You stepped away from them, and you met their eyes. “It’s my job, Steve.” He hesitated, but you pushed him away from the soldiers. “Go.” you commanded, pushing him again.
Finally, he nodded. “Okay,” he whispered, looking towards James. “We have to go, Buck.”
“Okay,” James echoed his friend, and moved towards you, as if to give you a hug. But you stepped away from him, a tear falling down your face.
“I refuse to say good-bye,” your voice was almost nonexistent, and James nodded. “NOW GO!” you commanded, your voice rising.
They obeyed, and in a second, they were gone, fog thickening and coiling around them, ensuring they would be unseen. And with a heavy sigh, you prepared to be a hero. Fire flickered in your hand, and you threw it on the ground. Gesturing with your hands, it created a fiery circle around you, the flames flickering and reflecting off your black suit. You turned your attention to the soldiers still hidden in your fog. You threw your hands out to the sides, and in a second, they were exposed.
Before you could do a single thing, you saw who was at the head of the pack. Your Master, his cold eyes flickering with amusement, and his green tattoos prominent against his milk white skin. His black robe was over his meticulous gray suit, and in his hand was his staff. “Oh my dear (Y/N), my Genesis,” he drew your name out, and you froze, your whole body stiffening.
“Mesmero,” you got out, your eyes widening in terror. He glided over to you, your fire circle sputtering out just like your will and your hope and your promise. You could feel him in your mind, in every part of your body, freezing it and controlling it, like he was never gone.
“You’ve been such a naughty little girl,” he remarked, and slapped you across the face. You bit your lip at the pain, and he laughed, sending chills down your spine. “But we’ll fix that, Lucas and I,” he cooed, pressing a cold hand against your head. “Let’s get started.”
THREE WEEKS LATER
“Sekhmet,” Mesmero breathed, caressing the wild girl’s cheek, and she leaned into his hand, her yellow feline eyes flashing in pleasure. “I’ve missed you. Let’s destroy the Avengers.”
