For humans, gods control the universe. True thing is no one controls the universe. But if you know the rules, you can predict what'll happen and use its laws to control things happening the way you want it. And this is enough to make stupid humans think you are a god: not controlling the universe, but making them believe you do so, just by the simple fact you know how it works.
