Just curious but how many drafts do you go through before you post?

i don’t really have drafts because i just make all changes in the same document i originally wrote in, but i usually end up rereading whatever i wrote at least twice to make sure that everything flows in a satisfactory way. thats not counting the amount of neurotic nitpicking i do in the middle of writing. i dont really ever ‘finish’ a chapter so much as i get sick of editing it and then i post it

the one exception to this is chapter 6 of msa which thus far has been scrapped and restarted at least 5 times in like 5 separate documents. that thing refuses to be written

Mikoto adores her. Kushina is the light of her life in a sea of extremely dour and depressing Uchihas, and Mikoto does her utmost to find excuses to accompany Kushina everywhere. When she was in the Academy she totally pulled the “I’m befriending the Nine Tails for the advancement of the Uchiha” card and has been by Kushina’s side ever since :)

I really love your comic! Kakashi is my absolutely favorite character and this comic is a blessing! It's inspired me to attempt to make my own comic byt I don't know where to start. Do you have any tips? Thank you for creating such a great comic!

Wahoo!!  Oh my goodness, I LOVE comics so if I’ve inspired you to make your own, that’s AWESOME!!

Where to start – hm, well, I usually have some feeling or some particular exchange I want to convey between two characters (a certain look, a dialogue, etc). It’s my driving motivation for powering through the whole time consuming process of making a comic. The rest is basically thinking up a way to build up to that desired point so the exchange has its proper oomf, and then figuring out how to resolve the comic after that point to leave the reader satisfied.

Once you have your idea, you should plan it out – even if only as a bullet point list of key moments in your head – so you don’t accidentally get tangled up with a plot hole midway through and have to go back and erase stuff you’ve drawn or retcon stuff or whatnot. I can tell you from experience that is the #1 fastest way to hate your comic and leave it unfinished, haha! It’s a big shame if you’ve put in lots of hours/days/months/years, so be sure to know where you’re going!

That said, it’s okay to give yourself some wiggle room. A lot of my most powerful scenes arise on the fly, just drawing what my hand wants to draw on any given day, and letting the sequence grow organically from there instead of strictly following a script.

Some folks prefer to work off a full script and/or thumbnails (I have a comic or two that I did that with and it was pretty nice to know exactly where you’re going at any moment, though personally I got a bit bored since I knew exactly what was going to happen and you and this comic are going to be bedfellows for a while so it better still be exciting after you’ve sunk in 50 hours and you’re still on the first page lmao).

I’m not nearly a good planner as that, though, and I’m notoriously lazy, so these days and for fancomics like this that I have no intention of doing anything professional with – they’re just fun pasttimes that I want to get out as quickly as possible to maintain emotional momentum – I pretty much grab my 5px hardbrush and start sketching out the scene, adding dialogue as I go.

Here’s an example of today’s comic on the left – I had doodled that last night but it felt kind of stale, so I slept on the scene and when I woke up I decided I needed to add Sakumo’s flashback to his wife to really cement the intensity and emotional importance of the scene, which I did, and I quickly polished up the sketchy and then I was done! :D

I think another important piece of advice to give is to decide now how “polished” you want your comic to look like. I’m perfectly capable of rendering full-colour comics, and I’m usually delighted by how they look, but they are TIME CONSUMING AS FUCK. It’s fine for short one-shot comics, but longform ones you have to really think about it because it’s very likely you’ll run out of steam long before the story’s done.

How much effort do you have to sink in to convey the core idea you want to show? Nice art is really nice, but at its heart your comic is about a story you want to tell, right? Otherwise you’d just draw a bunch of illustrations. So more focus on delivery and less on how beautiful the background looks, because that background that takes you 20 hours to draw will take someone 0.2 seconds to see. So instead just take 10 minutes to gesture out the background and move on to the more important parts!

A final point is your audience. Like – I 99% draw comics for myself. I draw them in my school notebooks, I draw them on psd files that never see the light of day, etc. I draw them for me. But sharing them can be super duper fun if folks get into it, and it’s a powerful motivator that can help you powerhouse through the marathon that is drawing a comic, especially when it’s longer stuff that may take you a good long while. So you have to keep a regular/predictable update schedule if you wanna keep your readers interested and coming back for more.

Most webcomics die because of this – they update so sporadically, people who were originally hyped lose focus and get bored and leave. The artist, discouraged, loses focus and updates even less frequently. Eventually the burden of drawing the comic that no one cares about anymore is exhausting and they burn out and the comic dies.

I’ve been guilty of this more than once, lmao!

So, uh, yeah! That was long. Start with short comics, compact one-shot scenes. Once you get good at doing that, you can tackle that epic novel idea you’ve got in your head – everyone has one, me included haha – but until that point, don’t bite off more than you can chew or you’ll burn out !

-the “group of wildly different people from wildly different backgrounds become family” trope is my absolute favorite trope in all of existence and the whole robin concept is just great ok
