Headdresses: Styles

The practice of wearing headdresses is a custom that the rylan have been observing since the pre-Hutt years. It is, in fact, considered horribly immodest to go without.

After the beginning of the Twi’lek slave trade, the headdresses often became a way the slavers prevented their victims from communicating in a way that the slavers could not understand. They made them from cultural symbols into muzzles for the lekku.

The difference is in the materials the headdress is fashioned from.

Slave headdresses are often elaborate, heavy contraptions made of stiff fabrics, metal, or hard leather. They cover, if not the entire lek, than enough to severely inhibit controlled movement.

Free rylan Day-side (the Cave-dwellers are a whole ‘nother deal) most often wear headdresses that do not even touch the lekku, or only the very base near the skull. A popular style is similar to a head-band, a simple leather crest made of soft, flexible leather or a slightly stiff material made of a tree-bark native to the Twilight Territory.

Supi wears one in this style made of richer materials, indicative of both her social status as a senators aide and her decorative status as the same.

Numa also wears a common style, more like a kerchief than anything else, designed to sit comfortably and lightly around the lekku. Hera Syndulla wears a more form-fitting version of this. It is a style used most often by the middle classes on Ryloth.

Jedi Master Aayla Secura’s choice of headdress is typical of Twi’lek dancers, though made of simple brown leather strips rather than colored ribbons. My personal opinion is that she chose this style as a statement, as she was known to possess a deep-seated anger over the mistreatment of her fellow female Twi’leks and her own experiences with discrimination and objectification. (I have a great deal of love for Aayla Secura. She will be getting at least one post all her own.)

(Lyn Me’s headdress is an example of  the usual material choice for Master Secura’s style.)

Headdresses’ practical use as muzzles declined somewhat over the millennia, as other methods of control were introduced, but heavy and overly elaborate designs are still indicative of enslavement and oppression.
